BSA .410 shotgun
      #259787 - 01/02/15 03:04 PM

I would like to sell this little garden gun. I am torn as to keep it and tart it up for ease of use or to sell. I would rather sell and let someone enjoy it and leave it original.

It is a BSA .410, using a long lee bolt on a small purpose built receiver, in a small plain stock. This is not one of the Indian police smle 410's.

Not thinking things thru I bought this assuming it would chamber a U.S. made modern shotshell. it is not so. The chamber is still original, in that it is a straight cased .303.

It is rather rough from use, but all there and sound. I have some magtech brass U.S. size cases and a few odd .303 brass for forming. Would like 250.00us for it, plus whatever shipping would be required.

Damn- would love to have that available in Canada - would buy it in a heart beat - or less. A straight .303 would be a bit short of 2 1/2", but no matter. Is it choked? If so how much pls? I have an inquiring mind - sorry.

A .40 or .41 cal gas check can be used as an over shot wad, or cards of course.

When using .444 Marlin brass in a regular .410 with .44 mag gas checks as over shot wads - I got better patterns with 1/2" shot than with factory shells in my favourite grouse gun, or in the original full choked gun - now is a weak modified choked gun good for birds on the wing to a strong 30yards.

One could always nip over the border and none the wiser.....:)

I have entertained the idea of keeping it, but of what use ? really would I have. Being pragmatic has its downside.

I have a small pocket full of 41colt projectiles that I thought would make a fine "Ball" load as well.

As to choke it measures .386" at the muzzle when taken in a rather workmen like fashion. One's to think that is a rather snug Full. It could stand a thorough bore polishing and at that time on the bench a bit of relief to the constriction could indeed well be undertaken.

Damn - as you say Daryl, the more I look upon it, the more I keep trying to make a reason to keep it. Some many good arms have come and gone.........

That is one slick looking shotgun, I've never looked at one even in pics.

On keeping the gun I have this to say, as I get older and have sold a few I regret

everyone and now trying to replace at least a few just because. $250 isn't all that

much just to keep this unusual safe queen - IMHO. Just me, but personally I'd keep it.

I made a lot of 410 shotguns on the standard SMLE rifle. Simple matter to bore and ream the barrel leaving in a degree of choke and chamber for the 3" 410 cartridge. Although the magazine stays in place the 410 won't feed from the mag but a single loaded cartridge will just drop in and chamber easily. The empties extract and eject perfectly. Remove the rear sight and replace the front blade with a bead and good to go. The bored out barrel lightens the SMLE up nicely and makes a slick and strong little gun with a good safety either on the bolt as Caprivi's gun has or left side of action for the latter model SMLEs. They usually threw a nice pattern and with the 3" shell were good little killers.

We cut our teeth on these as kids using them on ducks and rabbits and got more than a few goats at close range with the 410 slugs too. My father before me made them up and I learned from him and carried on the gun work.

I don't know why Caprivi's 410 has a long bolt action, the standard SMLE bolt and action made for the 303 British cartridge is plenty long enough for 3" shells. Very nice collectable though.

I'm liking the look of that case of "Ball" ctgs., Caprivi. As long as the ball is full sized or several of full sized balls, they'd be fun.
That is a NICE little gun.

I just measured the muzzle of my Brazillion Single shot .410 that shoots so well with both 2 1/2" and the .444 Marlin cases with 1/2 ounce + trimmed off WW .410 wad and 12gr. Unique with crimped G/C. and it's .400".

Oh seen a few Lees turned into a shotgun, almost common actually.

But isn't Caprivi's gun a one piece stock and the receiver & barrel

are one piece? Or do my old eyes deceive me, if so that is quite a bit

different from a converted Lee. --- John

Thanks Daryl. Yes those Ball ctg's are gnawing at me.

John, this is a purpose built little action. The barrel and receiver are 2 pieces, fitted very well. Look at the picture of the chamber stamping's. The parting line is right at the "410"
In the right light the receiver is "plum" and the barrel "blue".

You may have convinced me to keep it........at least for a little while longer :):)

That picture there could be the inspiration for Kimani and Peter McKenzie in Ruark's "Something of Value"

Those little shotguns are good for kids. Safer than a .22 as the range is far less if there is something in the background.

Good for learning to shoot well, only one shot usually.

And also while often aimed, can still teach some proper shotgunning skills.

I learned with a .410 side by side and enjoyed it a lot.
