I had occasionally thought of some of those holo sights that use a short section of weaver rail as a base, but I think the setup shown is a bit......odd.

I've rewritten this post three times to try and explain what I've been told is going on. This isn't an uncommon set=up anymore. We're starting to see used fire-arms coming into the US here, especially from Scandinavia, set-up in this manner. What I'm told is that this is an issue of practicality in these countries. Firearms ownership laws are strict. The rifle is obviously older than the mount. It probably passed from one generation to the next. The rifle is a practical tool. If it's given to you, you try to make it work. The Weaver/Picatinny system is well accepted in Scandinavia. You want a new optic/red=dot to hunt moose with. You can't justify the cost of the claw mounts and it may not even be practical to put a red-dot in claw mounts. So, you slap a Weaver style rail on your Drilling/Combination-gun/Double-barrel shotgun and off you go. The rifle may not have cost you anything up front, and you may not see the romantic side of the equation. To you, it's a meat getter, and it's cheap. Again, I'm kind'a just repeating what I've heard, but it does seem logical enough to me. No comment on how classy we, as collectors, might view the concept. Best, Norman4

To me it looks like a classic case of the early signs of the "tactical virus". If left untreated, a growth that resembles a scope will grow on the mount and in its classic form, will have lots of controls on the outside with multiple cross hairs and such on the inside, and in a short while the entire firearm will develop a dark green to matt black colour. If this disease spreads to the shooter, he will develop an uncontrollable urge to wear camo clothing everytime he goes bush and in extreme cases will even wear a gilli suit. The desire to get close to his quarry will, in most cases, leave him. He could even start to believe that hunting game is akin to war. The best treatment I know of to ward off the tactical virus is to just grab an old 22 single shot with no scope and walk a paddock shooting a few rabbits and remember when you were a kid.

Tact-i-cool is a disease. It stems from a complete disconnect from the culture of hunting, shooting, sportsmanship, and or self-defense. Some of it lies in the video game frenzy of detachment from reality, some of it comes from a cadre of chair-borne rangers with a Rambo psychosis. There's no honor of the hunt or respect for the weapon. It is a terrible thing, and it hurts us all. I own fire-arms which some would label as quasi-military, but I have a reverence for what they are capable of and what they are intended for. It ain't all one big game. I don't intend to paint with too broad a brush stroke. I should probably apologize up front to the folks I've just offended, but my feelings are my own. Norman4

Recknagel make these - you can also get a piccatiny rail for your shotgun. http://www.recknagel.de/Joomla/images/stories/Downloads/Katalog_9_Zielfernrohrmontagen.pdf - page 24

At least you are doing minimal damage and the claw mounts are still there.

You've solved the mystery. At least it's a quality mount. Fascinating catalog. Obviously they felt there was a need to fill.
Definitely geared to the modern European hunter who might be updating his vintage weapon. Does support what I've been told is happening. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if there is a US distributor? My God, they make every kind of mount and ring you could imagine!

How true.

And if not the "tac-i-cool" disease, simple stupidity and ignorance of what a proper mount looks like and where they can be sourced.

Nothing wrong with tacti-cool...to an extent.

Personally I want a Remington 7600 pump gun in .308, with a torch mounted under the barrel, and set up so the rear grip hand can activate it (actually, think more a tang safety style on/off switch..) - for a night time walking pig gun. I don't know if it's possible to set up like that though.

On classic guns though..just no.

Yep, clash of styles - classic and tactical. Nothing wrong with either but it really doesn't work to mix the two.

It easy to pick a modern tactical rifle by sight but I don't understand the meaning. To me the classic styles would present a realistic tactical arrangement. To me, tactical equates to practical and the modern tactical seems to mean something that can be modified easily without really being all that practical. Ease of modification is one thing, but I wouldn't think it's good tactics to do so. Probably over thinking it...

You might be overlooking the obvious, few NV scopes have a rail along the bottom to fit claw mounts to

Simply ghastly and ostentatious....

I want a HK 417 with exhibition grade walnut stock, rust blued barrel, express sights, rose and scroll engraving. Leather covered recoil pad. Naturally, fitted in an oak and leather case with tools and scope, silencer, nightvision etc. The perfect gun for everything from stalking deer to driven hunts on terrorist or high country adventures after Talibans
