Anyone know what this number means?
      #260366 - 12/02/15 07:58 PM

After all this recent talk about MS 1910's I pulled my old one out of the safe for a fondle this arvo.

For the first time I noticed a number other than the serial number and was wondering if any of you guys might know what it means.

The number is FF5971 and is stamped on the top of the knox form just in front of the chamber.

The serial number is in the usual spot and consists of 4 numbers only.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

GG

What was that? You've ordered dies and cases? :P

Can't help you on that, hopefully on of the resident MS Guru's chimes in soon.

This may or may not be your answer, but on an 8x56 Mannlicher-Schönauer made in 1925, the number
A-1525 has been engraved on the scope body and also the trigger guard. This is in addition to the usual Steyr factory serial number. The worn out leather sling on this rifle was marked S. L. Rohu, Gunmaker, Sydney, so I assume it had spent most of it's life in Australia. What I also assume is that, at some time the Australian government had some bright idea of trying to stamp individual numbers on firearms with a view to registering them. If that's the case, it might explain the number on yours. However, I'm not too sure what a "knox form" is in front of the chamber.

Ha ha Ash.......already got dies and cases mate......think I had them before the rifle :-)

Kiwibloke, thanks for your reply. My 9.5 actually came from Holt's in the UK several years ago. But who knows where it spent it's life - hard to imagine it would have been in the UK. She's a fairly beat up old girl stock wise, and could do with a re-blue too.......but the bore and chamber are nice, as is the bolt face.......hasn't done much actual shooting, just been carried a lot I think.

The knox form is just the chamber part of the barrel.

Cheers.
