Dorleac FZH switch barrel mauser?
      #259639 - 29/01/15 11:28 PM

I am speaking with the good people at Dorleac about them Building me a switch barrel mauser on a FZH action. My thought is a 9.3x62 and a flatter shooting cartridge that is very common to simplify ammo in the great north and Africa. I don't think a 7x57 will feed perfectly so I was thinking a 270 Winchester or maybe a 30-06.

Am I missing an obvious better second cartridge?

450-400, 9.3x74r and 7x65r.

Rell, 9.3x62 and 270 Winchester are a reasonably common combination as the cartridges are very similar dimensionally including length and they use the same bolt face. Hartmann and Weiss have made switch barrel take down rifles in these calibers for some time.

If keeping the same basic cartridge is preferred and you like the 7mm caliber there's the .280 Remington which is ballistically similar to the 7x64mm but uses the 30-'06 parent case. Norman4

The 7x57 should have zero problems feeding from the same action as the 9.3x62. Give Ray Atkinson a ring at Atkinson hunting adventures. He will set you strait. If you intend to handload, he can give good advice about how to have the throats of both barrels set up for best performance as well. However, both rounds do just fine with decent factory loads in standard chambers. Your GM might not like the idea of long throated (i.e. Non spec) chambers anyway.

Rell,

Joel at Dorleac would be excellent I would think at advising if a second cartidge would have any feeding issues.

The 7x64 is an excellent European cartridge. Feeding issues if combined with a 9.3x62, no idea.
