What is the story with the Mayfair Engineering Mauser action?
I'm thinking of having AHR build be a little 7x57 to go along with my GMA auctioned 375 H&H he's working on. I don't think GMA makes a small ring action suitable for a 7x57.
If the Mayfair is not the choice, what should I use?

An original intermediate mauser action, of course!

I would be surprised if Mayfairs standard action was overly heavy, after all the do specify the 257 Rigby in their advertising.
They certainly look like good actions.

Medwell and Perrett are a good company and they build nice guns. That said, you can get a Mauser clone made from 8620 steel (the same steel that these actions are made from) right here in the US from granite Mountain Arms for considerably less. If you do want an entirely British action and rifle, of course, that shouldn't be a matter of concern.

How much cheaper is the GMA action in the US than the Mayfair action as here in Australia they are both roughly the same price, obviously as both are imported items for us.

Thanks for the information everyone.
It turns out GMS does make a 98 specifically for the 7x57 cartridge, they just don't have it on their web site. At $3,000 it's a touch steep but it will be the perfect companion tonthen375H&H that I'm having AHR build me on the GMA magnum action.
I also found out about the FZH action especially made for the construction of takedown mausers ...
A take down in 9.3x62 and 270 Win would be hella interesting, no?

Waidmannsheil,
There was a post about Mayfair's pricing right here on the NE forums some time ago. Their prices are in Pounds Sterling, and GMA's prices are roughly equal, but in US Dollars. That would make the GMAs approximately 40 to 50% cheaper for a US buyer. Of course, as you point out, this might not be reflected in Australia.
Good hunting!

Rell,
I know that my friend Joel Dorleac really likes the FZH actions. They not only make them to the original Mauser design like both Mayfair and GMA do, but they use a different steel that is hardened to different levels for the various parts based on the original Mauser methods. i guess, if you're a purist, that would matter.
Best wishes with whatever you select, and do post about your build whenever you start it.
Good hunting!
