Hunt with self-built double
      #259205 - 20/01/15 12:40 AM

I have just returned from a hunt for Scimitar-Horned Oryx in the hill country of Texas. I took a very nice one with the double rifle that I completed last year in calibre 9.3 x 74 Rimmed. The rifle performed flawlessly, taking this beauty at 154 yards. This was the "first blood" for this rifle. These are big, tough animals. You need to keep in mind when viewing this photo, that I am 6'10" tall and weigh 310 pounds, so I make animals "shrink" in photos. LOL!

Very nice and well done, especially with that fine double.

Ron;

Lovely trophy and a testament to your fine craftsmanship in building such an accurate rifle. It is not everyday that you learn of someone who is shooting game with a double rifle at distances that a bolt action rifle shooter would be proud of.

Thank you both. I have been trying to convince people for years that a double rifle, properly regulated and sighted, is easily capable of shots out to 250 and even 300 yards. Two years ago, in Zimbabwe, I took my sable antelope at 208 yards with my self-built double rifle in calibre .450 #2 NE. I did not feel that I was stretching the capabilities of the rifle one iota.

Very nice Ron.
Good thing you're from Canada. In a warmer climate with a longer growing season you may have gotten huge!

Fantastic rifle and nice shooting! Always nice to see the end result of these projects being used for what they were intended. How is your latest build coming along?

Congratulations Ron, well done and is good to see builders apply their trade with the product they build...there are so much critic regarding the self build of a double, people tend to believe all the negative stuff...here you show the opposite by using it to hunt. It really is a extremely positive example for us "want to builders" to follow ....it really is appreciated much...

Well done Ron. It must be a great pleasure to hunt with rifles you have personally made yourself.

Yes, no reason why a double rifle can not shoot to the same distances as other rifles, if it is accurate enough and well sighted in. Maybe this should be a question/survey discussion for a new thread. I assume it hasn't been done before on NE, but it does not matter anyway.

Nice Oryx. Cool to be able to hunt African plains game species in your own country AND take the meat home. Something exotic for the table.

John,
The truly great thing about what Texas has done in the last 50 years is that they have preserved African animals that are either extinct or critically endangered in their home ranges. Last year we hunted free-range Aoudad in West Texas, a really physical hunt. This year we hunted Scimitar-Horned Oryx in the hill country, north-west of San Antonio. Next year, God willing, we'll be after Addax in the same area. There is no where else on the planet, that I am aware of, where these animals may be legally hunted and added to one's African trophy room.

I realize that this does not properly belong on this forum, however, given our common interest, I thought some of you might like to see it. I am out of wall space in my little African trophy room and was puzzled as to how to display this Oryx. I've not seen this done anywhere before, so whatever blame or credit accrues, is mine. I had some chunks of red oak lying around my woodworking shop that I used for the base, the "outriggers', and the mounting plate. For $15 at Home Depot, I bought a red oak newel post for a stairway. The rest is self-explanatory. The "outriggers" have those little slippery nylon feet screwed to their undersides, so the unit is easy to move around for cleaning, etc.

GPJ,
Yes, I can't go to the loo without a book. What you see in the photos is about 25% of what I have. So sad that today's generation is so fixated on their electronic devices that many do not read at all.

Looks like some excellent reading there...

I've been collecting what African hunting books I can find locally but it looks like you are holding all the inventory

I'm proud to be one of the slow typers and fast readers of todays generation.

Again very nice rifle, have you posted more pictures elsewhere?

Beautiful little double you've built there Ron, and it looks really trim and slender.
Top quality build as always with your double rifles Ron.
Fantastic Oryx as well!

Some very nice mounts in your trophy room too!
Thanks for showing us.

Yes Ron, I do agree with you, there is nothing like the smell of a book , the feeling of papers/pages between a person`s fingers when I read...I currently am purchasing all Richard Harland`s books..it is about elephant culling and hunting never done before on such a grand scale...I see you like to hunt Zinbabwe( Rhodesia in the good times)...although I can download books on my e- reader I still prefer to purchase my hunting books from Rowland Ward South Africa , their service is excellent, book prices extremely fair....I really enjoy reading your threads and really hope to build such beautiful double rifles you are currently building...thank you very much for sharing it really is much appreciated...

Well Done Ron! I think we can both agree that the building of these rifles is only finally done when they are used as intended to take a nice animal cleanly. If I couldn't hunt with my doubles I would quit making them. You have set the bar of excellence very high in all the things you produce and most of us would not be able to reach that mark. But then again, you are 6' 10" ! Good Job!!!
