Very nice looking rifle, indeed. Stocks fore end big "schnabel" is only small detail which I don´t like so much.

but as a present you will take it?

in my opinion it is the bolt action of the year, hard to top with the Zeiss zielsechs on claw mount

I don´t know if there is any reason to say "reach level" when talking about soldered half scope rings. IMO they are a working solution in tecnical means but much too difficult to asembly. And what happens when scope goes broken...

Holland & Holland simply copied the WW1 Austro-Hungarian sniper scope mount, much like the one seen on this FEG "Mannlicher" sporting rifle. But as H&H did not use soldered half-rings, but clamping rings that were not proof against slight slipping, H&H added a distance rod as a mechanical crutch to keep the ring at the proper distance for secure lockup.

A German would bring the rifle back to his favorite gunsmith/-shop for repair or mounting another scope...

there could be no doubt that a modern weaver rail and a claw mount with soldered half rings must have a certain level of quality to work as intended. do you think they represent the same level of quality?
when making the second you have to fit the claw mount by hand disassemble the scope to solder the tube into the halfrings. than you assemble the scope again and proof the sight while shooting it.
disassemble the scope again for blueing the tube +rings and than assemble and finaaaaly ready.

the only other work I would compare it is soldering double rifle barrels - time consuming, expensive, possible making mistakes and start again
unfashionable

anyone from the art's and craft movement http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arts_and_Crafts_movement would have seen the soldered half ring as the highest level

IMO the question is the quality of work, not the way you mount your scope. Both soldering and weaver rail could be done badly if you don´t know how and what to do. But soldering is much more time consuming and expensive and you always need a gunsmith. I know that in Germany and Austria hunting /shooting has always been a hobby for people who have time and money to use gunsmith for all gun works but in scandinavia and USA hunting has in many cases been a part of living which means bad conditions and lower standard of living i.e. less money so that´s why these gunworks has been much more as DIY. For example I have seen fotos of famous Finnish seal hunters Mauser which scope mounts has welded to the rifle. Despite that this rifle was very accurate and served well as a tool for this prohunter.

So I think it´s mostly cultural question if you use claw mounts with soldered rings or steady mounts with weaver rail. Properly done both ways works well.

Most modern scopes are aluminium which precludes soldering in any case.

Kuduae, dear friend,

Regarding the H&H type English scope mount, which in fact is only a variation of the claw mount system, it is wrong to write that H&H did not use soldered rings.
In fact, originally, many mounts used rings soft soldered on the scopes steel tubes of the period; and this remained until the sixties, mainly on Hensoldt scopes with steel main tube.
Notice also the use of H&H mounts fitted to German scopes with 70° prismatic rail, an excellent solution to prevent the assembly from being able to take play.
Tension rod between rings appeared in the early eighties with the generalization of light alloy and larger diameter scopes tubes whose rigidity could not guarantee an assembly free of tolerances when fitted to big game rifles.
26mm steel tubes did not need this device whose sole purpose was to maintain a constant spacing between the rings.
Below are some pictures to illustrate these points.
Happy New Year to all !

To illustrate the tension rod that maintains constant spacing between the rings, here, some pictures of a D&D rifle still in the making and fitted with that device

the 10,75x68 in vienna was the bargain of the year 2014,this is the dream of any MS collector.

someone polished the barrel before maybe for an restoration but otherwise looks fine. that it was end for this money ... only explanation I have it was simply overlooked.
I have got the link to the auction before also but had no time to look in

Definately agree, maybe some people thought it cobbled together?

Any idea if this is one of the 4 known, or a new one surfacing?
