Belgian Rolling Block 4 Bore
      #257767 - 12/12/14 09:02 PM

Coming up at the Holts Auction.

http://auctions.holtsauctioneers.com/asp...128&image=0

A SUBSTANTIAL 4-BORE BREECH-LOADING SPORTING-RIFLE, UNSIGNED, MODEL 'ROLLING-BLOCK', no visible serial number,
Belgian, circa 1880, with massive tapering two-stage 33in. barrel, block and blade fore-sight, the rear-sight elevating on an elliptical scale, heavy slab-sided receiver with reinforced nocksform, rotating breech-block operated via a handle on the right hand side, central hammer, walnut straight-hand butt-stock with rubber heel-plate (perished) and splinter fore-end with large iron barrel-band, shallow pitting to exposed iron surfaces, weight approximately 22 1/2lbs.

Provenance: This rare and behemothic rifle is of the same type as carried by Morton Stanley during his time in Africa for use against elephant. Stanley's own rifle survives and is held by the National Rifle Association's museum at Fairfax, Virginia.

Other Notes: "Dr. Livingstone I presume?"

Henry Morton Stanley, a Welsh-born journalist turned African explorer working for the New York Herald, uttered the question on the shores of Lake Victoria in 1872 on meeting the missionary Dr. Livingstone who the world had assumed lost in 'Darkest Africa'. Finding him was the journalistic coup of that decade and this adventure was the start of Stanley's career as an explorer, his greatest achievements being the mapping of the River Congo; the settlement of the Congo basin on behalf of Leopold, King of the Belgians and the search for Emin Pasha.

Estimate £5,500-7,500

It now resides in the National Firearms Museum.
I believe these are .9** caliber.

8.73" = 5 bore
9.19" = 6 bore
9.77" = 5 bore
1.052" = 4 bore
1.326" = 3 bore
1.671" = 2 bore

according to my chart

If a rifled 6 - then could be a 5 bore for brass 4 bore case? Just guessing here.

It has been at Holt's before and was unsold

Quite a monster but not for me in Rolling Block

It sold for £6500 GBP + 30% = £8450 = $13280

Daryl - 4 bores have a wide variation as you know I did not think to measure it

Zoinks!! Rolling blocks are my passion and now I want one. This is all Ash's fault for sending me this link. Kind of a funny looking bugger, ain't it? Not a "traditional" rolling block, it would seem.

I remember when this rolling block was for sale maybe arround the year 2002. was a best gun dealer on the east cost of the united states. he had another but similar 4 bore rolling block for sale the same time but maybe for a third of the money because it lacks the prestigious Stanley connection.

IMHO, calling a .93 a 4 bore, is like calling a Chevy Camero an Impala.

Traditional it seems most 4 bores are actually 6's. Still deemed a 4 in the old days and today.

I'd say anything above .9 is a 4, in the old days, unless stamped otherwise?

PS: Impala's are better

LOL - better while dating. You use the Camero SS 396 or 454 for getting the dates.

Not as big as a Model 98 Olds.

Oh my goodness just found my dream American car! Oldsmobile 442, like a 1970 one or something..Nice looking!

Off topic though! Anyone have any idea how the action functions on one of these big rollers? Looks fairly different to the remington/ryders.
