I was wondering if anyone on here had any information regarding Walter Roll's Mauser rifles. Specifically the timeline in which he stamped the barrels with simply his initials and a number and when he changed to stamping his full name and using the Mauser number system. Thank you for any information you may have.

Try to find book Speed-Schmid-Herrmann: Mauser Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles. In page 296 there begins a story of Walter Röll Mausers. He was the last head of Mauser Oberndorf Sporting Arms Department, from 1932-46. After that he made and repaired Mauser Sporting rifles using the remaining inventory of factorys leftover parts.

This special S/N series, marked in script with Walter Roll's initials "WR", consisted of 200 sporting rifles assembled early during the French occupation of the Mauser factory in Oberndorf ( June 1946-August 1947 ) before changing over to the standard Mauser numbering system. I have recorded 6 rifles with S/N 39, 55, 73, 103, 131, and 159. I owned S/N 131, a Type S in 6.5x57 with a Zeiss 8X Zielacht scope.

Mine is in the Mauser serial number system, 126,000 something, same font as Mauser used, unmarked above the wood line other than serial & cal, no proof marks or makers name, his name is stamped on the bottom of the barrel. looks like your std model B except has a left handed cheekpiece

I posted the highest Mauser - Röll Serial number known to me here:
http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=231433&an=0&page=2#Post231433
It's # 128171, proofed 1960. Typical for most Walter Röll rifles ist the Mauser design, but light alloy, bottom metal with a steel floor plate. See Jon Speed’s “Mauser Archive”, page 503.

My 5,6x61 S.E. v. Hofe is marked "Röll Oberndorf a. N." under the barrel, (i.e. visible only by removing the stock) The proof record shows the date as 13/11/57. The serial number is 157201.

Apart from an aluminium floor plate and a satin finish receiver, it is a typical Mauser sporter.

BTW, the Mauser book described by Igorrock has a photo of Walter Röll, but I have never seen one of Ernst August vom Hofe. Any suggestions as to where to look?
