cast 375 H&H loads

Guys any one got some good loads or clues on how to work up a load using ADI powders and cast projectiles of around 300 to 310 gr in weight.
I've just got a Brooks mould made up and am keen to get using it but have no idea where to start.

Can't help you with direct loads for the 375H&H but I do load cast in my 404 Jeffery using AR2209 with good results. Obviously the 404 is a little different from the 375H&H but the maximum recommended load of AR2209 for a jacketed bullet in the 404 is 80.0grs and I'm using 63.0grs with 350gr and 400gr gas checked cast bullets.

Von Gruff who posts here, developed this AR2209 1800-1900 fps MV very accurate load for his 404 and 350gr cast bullet. He also uses AR2208 for full velocity cast bullet loads in his 404. I followed his lead and found the same good performance with his 350gr cast and my own 400gr cast using AR2209. I use one wool wad over the powder charge and I don't think VG uses wads or fillers. I also use a magnum primer just to ensure a good ignition.

Have encountered no problems with this lower load of slower powder.

I tried a full case (to base of bullet) of Trail Boss with a 310gr. cast in my .375 - worked well, but needs more variation to find it's 'best load' with that powder. The velocity was 1,360fps in my 80gr. case.

70% of a full case is the starting load with that powder. A maximum load is a full case that does not compress the powder by the bullet. Do not compress this powder.

SR7625 powder shot under an inch at 100yards in my BRNO .375H&H, using 270gr. cast (Lyman mould) w/gas check and 23.0gr. using the rifle's little peep sight and bead front.

Is the bullet gas checked ? What sort of velocity are you hoping to achieve ?

Gentlemen,

my experience with reduced loads consists mostly of the german Haendler& Naterman bullets which are soft lead, copper plated and coated with cetyl alcohol (for friction reduction in the bore)

.375 H&H
case: Remington or Winchester
bullet: 250grs Haendler& Naterman RN lead copper plated
Powder: Kemira N110 30.0grs
Primer: CCI LR
seating depth: bullet seated ca. one diameter length (9-10mm) in case
velocity 530 m/s (22" barrel Sako)
energy: 2275 Joule
precision @ 50 meters: ca 2 inches for 5 shots

This above mentioned load is for information only.

Where do you get those from Rolf? I can't see them listed on H&N's web site.

Hello Oldbrit,

they are not available any more, I only bought the last supply my dealer had.

Note:
My dealer asked H&N directly how to obtain more of these "out of production" bullets,
he was told that a complete cast (50 - 150 kg lead) must be ordered for a special run.

But I regret for having nobody found who would be interested in obtaining large quantities of
.513" 300grs RN
.375" 250grs RN
.365" 192grs FN
H&N copper plated High Speed bullets :-(

Thanks anyway. If ever you hear of them making the 375 bullets again give me a shout will you? Heaven alone know if I'd be able to get them in the UK but one of the European web sites might ship them.

Welcome Halesy404.

Just last weekend I worked up a really nice plinking load for my Ruger No.1 in 375 H&H Magnum.

Projectile:
255 grain RCBS FN GC mould - throws a 261 grain projectile with wheel weights plus 2 percent tin
Sized to .376" and lubed with SPG lube

Powder:
33 grains ADI-BM1

Wad:
1x grey foam wad 1/2" x 5/8" pressed down nicely onto the powder but not tamped down too hard

Primer:
RWS 5333 Magnum primer (only used these cause I had a couple of hundred of them sitting around)

Case:
Kynoch

5 shots Chronographed at 10' went as follows:

1566
1565
1576
1564
1573

Average of 1569 fps
ES 12 fps

100 yard group for the 5 shots 1-1/8" (4x Pecar scope fitted just for group testing)

With the open express sights I can keep 3 into an inch or a bit less at 50 yards all day. No visable leading after 30 odd shots. Had great fun busting clay targets with it at various ranges out to a hundred yards or so.

Nice load, very accurate, very mild and very useful. Kills our wallaby neatly with no fuss at all, just bang flop. So far so good. I think I'll enjoy playing with this.

Same caveats as usual with any loading data, my loads, worked up in my rifle, start lower and work up etc etc.

Years ago, as in 1973, I used a .375 BRNO with the flip-up peep and bead front sight to get into 3-position shooting. The load was a Lyman WW cast W/CG 272gr. bullet loaded with 23gr. of SR7625 (+ a tuft of dacron) and a CCI 200. That load would just hold the 1 1/2" 10 ring of the normal 3-position target when shot off the bench.

I mere 10 grains of Alliant Red Dot makes a light plinker load with cast bullets. One hols cloverleaf groups a foot low at 50 yards for me.

15 grains of Alliant's Red Dot powder under a compressed cotton ball and a 255 grain cast lead bullet works well at 100 yards from my Win M70.

Today, I'd start with 70% capacity to the neck, of TB, with any bullet. I'd be inclined to try a 300gr. or heavier cast, just because. I friend left me with a whack of 310gr. FN's and in my .375/06 AH, they run an inch at 50 yards, shot to the post of the duplex retical and gave 1,385fps - plenty as a hunting load for NA ungulates.
I suspect a full case, that is 100% to the bottom of the seated bullet, might beat 1,400fps in the H&H case. Note, they are go-pow loads - no recoil and low noise. Sound like a larger bore .22 RF.
