Hi all,

I am headed to Kenya for the first 2 weeks of March with a fly and casting rod, with the sole intention of being a fishing bum. Although I plan to hire a boat for a couple of days to target Marlin, Sailfish, and Swordfish, I would like to fish from the beach as well as hire a panga (or whatever they are called locally), to head out past the reef. Any info or advice is appreciated.

Good luck on the trip. Should be great fun.

Any idea of where on the coast of Kenya you will be visiting?

I would love to visit Lamu having missed going there in 1989. I was told only last month it has changed a lot and lost a lot of the magic and atmosphere. A uausal places and times change. Still would love to go there.

Funny how these Swahili places used to be great tourist places but today often have other real problems.

PS Have you been to the coast there before? Can't make any comments on the fishing, but someone I know might be able to. But can make some comments on eg Mombasa from the 1980's at least.

Been a few times, caught Marlin, Tuna (yellowfin), dorado or Felushi as they call them there, cuda, wahoo. If you are going over the reef you then have about 2 hours before you hit the cliffs where the big stuff is. However, if you are taking a fly rod only I donīt think you need to do that. Twice while trolling small rubber lures behind within the reef for small tuna as livebait we hooked up with something that shouldnīt have been there, both times on 30lb gear, first was a black marlin (est 500lbs) who just buggered off, second time a marlin on a rapala !! not big, 150lb ish but both were only 300 yards from shore. You will have a blast I am sure, regards, Mike

Thanks Ash, will do.

Darryl, don't worry, any billfish will be C&R. If I happen to land a nice wahoo or tuna, I may be tempted to catch & fillet.

John, I have not been there before, but it seems that Lamu, Malindi, Watamu, Kilifi, and Shimoni are places to explore. I saw the news report on YouTube from earlier in the year so I'm guessing the area around Lamu will have more military and police and will therefore be the safer place on the coast. As for small magical places disappearing, it is what happens when word gets out and technology spreads. If your friend has any info, be it dated, I will listen.

Mike, thanks for the info and well done. Were you fishing the Pemba channel by chance? It sounds like the small boats have a good possibility for a lot of fun.

A year has passed already. It was a fun short trip, and my camera decided to malfunction when I went deep sea fishing out of Ocean Sports in Watamu. Although I didn't catch a marlin, I did catch sailfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado, and Spanish mackerel. In the village of Faza, on Pate Island, in Lamu, I went out with the locals in a dhow and fished with a net (with a gauge that was too small IMO), then went out another day and fished with a hand line. I was the only white man on the island, save the albino. I didn't make it down to the Pemba channel, but would make sure I got there if I go again. I do have pics and video on a card, I just need to download and sort them. If anyone is thinking of heading out that way to go fishing, send me a PM for more details. Pics to follow.

Looking forward to it too in anticipation.

Upsetting when one's camera karks it at an inopportune time in the wilds of Africa. Happened to me in 1988 but managed to get an SLR repaired by an Indian in Nairobi !!!

Good idea nowadays to carry an SLR plus a pocket spare. At worst, the mobile phone camera can take some 'ordinary' pics.
