What are the rifles and calibres PH's use but what would they prefer after seeing a lot of clients expensive rifles or are they mostly happy with their choices?

...good question...and, if i may be so bold...with or without a scope (and why)...and what rifles/calibres would they use if in a hunting - as opposed to a guiding - situation for dg and plains game...

I believe you hunt with the rifle you are the most comfortable with. I hunt with a Sako 375 that is scoped with a 1.75 - 5 X25 scope. I set the magnification most of the time to 1.75, gives a wider field of view. I use my Sako for all my personal hunting as well and have one hell of a job keeping my daughter away from it, she loves it. Both my children hunt with my scoped custom built 308 Win Mag. If a client is using my 375 I carry the 308.

What I want, the list is to long . However I did decide to build another rifle and after long discussions with my friend Pierre van der Walt I decided on a 416 Remington with open sights. This rifle will be for DG hunts, but it will have to prove itself as I got a lot of trust in my 375. To me - the best all round rifle.

My PH used a European made .30-06 that was well worn and the checkering was about non-existant because of use. It was scoped and he used Nosler Particians and wanted for nothing more. He only hunted plains game.

I use a .500 Jeffrey open sighted rifle custom built on a left handed Weatherby action by Sabi Rifles in Nelspruit RSA. I'm perfectly happy with it and don't want anything else. I guess I get to see a lot nice rifles owned by clients, but I'm more than happy with my the one I have. The other PHs who work with us use the following:

.458 Lott
.458 Stewart (3 inch)
.416 Rigby
.416 Rigby

I wouldn't allow any PH who works for us to use anything smaller than a .40 calibre when conducting a hunt in any DG area.....but I am very choosy indeed about every aspect & standard of our PH's.

My observation is that the majority of PHs who can afford a double get a .470 due to ammo availability.

The bulk of the rest of the PH's carry either a .458 Lott or a .416 (either Rigby or Rem).

This is in reference to PHs who earn their living hunting dangerous game.

The Ph that I hunted with used a Brno 458 Win Mag with express sights. He has since had it converted to 458 Lott.

No DG in our area. I use a Krieghoff Classic Big Five DR in 9,3 X 74 R.

My PH in Zim carried an open sighted (no scope) M70 chambered for the 416 Rem Mag. He was having terrible time trying to locate ammunition for it.

Having been but one time I have only a little exposure to PH rifles. Of the three PH's whose rifles I saw or discussed with them, and who all are Zim unrestricted liscense holders, one prefered a Krieghoff 470 and had a Lott as a back up as well as a 375H&H which was mostly used by clients. Another had a 375H&H but was awaiting delivery of a new Lott and the third had a 470 by a Belgian maker whose name escapes me at the moment. Mahillion Bros? I've heard the name and read of them but I'm having brain cramps. It was a nice rifle though not fancy.

I use a custom .450 Rigby Rimless magnum on a double square bridge Mauser-copy (Vektor) action. If doing a plainsgame only hunt in bushveld, my 9.3x64 on a 98 Mauser action (also custom) get the nod. In Namibia I use my 8x68 (also custom rifle on M98 action) almost exclusively. The 2 rifles that I normally borrow to clients are my 9.3 and a 7x64.

I am happy with any properly functional rifle, but prefer controlled feed actions on DG hunts. Personally, I get a bit envious if a client hunts with a double....

Alan,

I take it you mean when Eugene/Sabi Rifles supply the action as well? - The ones I've seen are excellent. I was in there the other day and Fani (Eugene's father) had a very smug grin on his face as he'd just bought himself some original Obendorf actions - maybe you're two buddies will get lucky!!!!

I've just had Sabi fit an extended magazine that was very kindly made for me by a good friend in the UK, so now I have 3 & 1 capability........which might just get me out of the smelly stuff one day...... I don't know why, but the rifle feeds even better with the new mag than it did with the original.- To say that I'm pleased about it is the understatement of the year.

FWIW, My rifle was made to my own specifications which meant a very short barrel & big foresight for fast target acquisition and it works just dandy...... esp when I need it to.

Thanks for your comments Steve.
Eugene emailed me about 7 weeks ago and said paperwork was holding them up from being exported.
Look forward to them arriving.
Al
P.S. I like the idea of a fast handling short barrelled rifle.

Here's a couple of pics. The rifle looks like it's had a hard life because it has!! - I'm almost ashamed to take it to Sabi Rifles because of the reproachful looks I get from the staff.......

Steve if I owned a rifle the same as that one of your's it would take pride of place in my gun cabinet.
I'll bet it has a story or two it could tell.
What length is the barrel ?
Be proud it is a great rifle !

Thanks Alan, glad you like it..... the barrel is 20 inches and has a red fibre optic foresight which is quite simply fabulous - esp in low light.

The rifle & I had 3 especially exciting moments this season. One was a charging (wounded) Buffalo which we dropped at 7 yards another was a charging (wounded) Leopard which we stopped at 6 yards and the other was a wounded/dying Lion which I shot at 20 yards. The Lion wasn't charging as such. The client had hit it in the heart but asked me to shoot on report as it was so close to camp...... The Lion jumped straight up in the air at the clients shot and I hit him just under his left eye when he was at the top of his bounce...... by the time he hit the ground, he was as dead as charity......

You'll find pics of all 3 animals on the Tanzania page of our website. The pics are currently being mover around by our webmaster but you'll get some idea of the animals ect and you'll see the hole in the Leopards face where I whacked him......

My PH in Zim uses a 500 Jeffery built by Sabi. Short barrel and custom Ghost ring rear on rear bridge (98 action). Upgraded wood and really a beautiful rifle. They really do good work. As a backup he has a BSA 458 Win.

Steve

Nice looking setup. Not easy to find suitable left bolt actions in Africa I would imagine? They sure are not easy to come by here in Australia!

How do you find recoil with that stock? Does the cheek piece help? I am in the process of building a 500 A-Square and want to get the best out of the rifle stock. I have a 450 Ackley and find the recoil back into the shoulder is ok, but the stock hitting my cheek bone during the muzzle flipping upward is uncomfortable.

Thanks for any input.

Fergus

Fergus,

I bought the rifle in the UK some years before I came to live in Africa and it started life as a .416 Weatherby...... not because I like the Weatherby theories but because it was the only left hand action I could buy. I had it rebuilt to .500 by Sabi Rifles a few years ago..... however the last time I was there they told me they had just bought a bunch of L/H actions from (I think) Dakota rifles...... anything built on those actions should be fabulous......

The recoil isn't too bad but I do have a mercury tube recoil arrestor fitted into the stock which helps a lot....as does that particular stock design. The stock was made to my measurements which also helps.

When I got the rifle back from Sabi they hadn't fitted the mercury tube and it kicked like a bastard but they had warned me about it and said I should consider the mercury tube option....... they weren't wrong!

I'm used to the rifle now and don't find it uncomfortable at all....... and subsequent shots are very quick.....although I have to say, I usually find the first shot does the business and follow up shots are rarely needed......
