Elk cow drops to the 308 Win.
      #256071 - 30/10/14 11:36 PM

We headed up in the mtns yesterday morning..got up at 330AM drove a hour or so..raining, snowing, blowing hard..but as the day progressed nicer weather prevailed and so did the hunting..while doing a drive with another couple this cow came trotting out of the timber.. I ranged her after she initially stopped at 352 yards..she turned to trot off when the little Lady pulled the trigger on her .308W..the cow dropped to the shot..raking shot..entering directly behind the rib cage and coming to rest on the opposite side shoulder..liver and one lung was totally destroyed using 165gr accubonds out of her Kimber rifle..

Ripp,
don't ever piss Lovey off, she'll make you suffer a lot first.....my missus is a better shot than me - just doesn't like recoil!
My 7x57 is her recoil limit.
Good lot of meat for the larder!

So -- details please.

What was the load behind the accubond, and what was the fpsMV?
What are the barrel specs?
What is the scope/reticle?
What does that bullet look like now?

MV FPS was around 2800 using the 165 gr. Accubond--factory Kimber barrel --
Scope is a Zeiss Rapid-Z 600..
The bullet was hammered...will try to get a photo..mushroomed well..would guess it retained 60% plus of its weight..looked very similar to a partition ...

The rifle is 4 years old..she has used it on whitetail, mule deer and now elk..
For Antelope she seems to prefer the 22-250...which used to be my rifle.. --she actually shoots the 22-250 even better ..however she did mention to me she wants to go with the next time I shoot one of my 300's to see what the recoil is like..think she is making a play on another one of my rifles..

One item I recently purchased was a Primos trigger activated shooting stick..helped her a ton as the bipod is not high enough to get over the sage brush and higher grass we have this year as a result of ample July and August rains..

While I reload for 90% of our guns, we picked up a box of this when she first got the rifle..shot so well we went back and bought 4 more boxes..all we have used for the past 3 years....Factory Nosler Ammo.. I have run them through a chrono in my 280AI as well..very close to the published MV...and with the 280AI incredibly accurate as well..when I first got the rifle I couldnt find 280AI brass so bought some ammo to have the brass --went out to the range to shoot them up ..they shot so well I kept them for hunting which is what I ended up using on my Bighorn Sheep I shot back in 2010..

What powder you using out of yours? I read last night that Varget works very well as well as trying 4831sc..

I plan to try the varget first because of its temperature sensitivity and I use in my .243 and have for the past 15 years or so..works very well ..and meters great to boot..

Charge weight -- with Varget (as you've seen I'm sure) *even though it's super stable across a broad range of temperature* can vary quite a bit from lot to lot. My 180 gameking load uses standard WLR primers and over 40 grains powder. I've seen a good range of charges/lot#'s giving the same velocity. Once the load/lot is found it's accurate and consistent.

Yes, I was actually talking to a friend last week who stated he loaded up some 300 Win with his favorite load..but different lot of powder..big difference..had to go back and redo until he found where that lot worked for his rifle...

Have heard that for years which is why when I get a big purchase of one type I try to make sure they all have the same lot number on the side...
