Calibers and Barrel Lengths for a Mosin Nagant
      #252041 - 13/08/14 06:02 AM

So Im planning this Mosin Nagant build (maybe TWO...), and Im pondering caliber options.

FIRST Im really not opposed to 762x54r. It'll handle anything in North America (please no Brown Bear arguments), that Im likely to choose to hunt with it.

NEXT I kinda like the cheap surplus (762x54r) for some fun range time AND Soft Point ammo is reasonably easy to find.

So WHAT are OPTIONS for the Mosin? How much re-work is necessary (magazine, etc)? Any calibers that DON'T require mods?

IF I stick with 762x54r, WHAT is a reasonable barrel length-20", 22" 24"?

Thanks

first barrel length

for a normal sporting rifle with half stock I would allways prefer 60cm or 24 inch

a full stock stutzen with 50cm or 20 inch is maybe the best

for other rounds? the only factory cartridge today working in an unchanged magazine is the PRVI 8x56R Mannlicher I believe. 9,3x53R Finnish and 8,2x53R ( a 7,62x54R with an 8mm S bullet)are semi obsolet today made by Sako or Lapua from time to time. 8,2x53R goes in the magazin and 9,3x53R needs only a little bit of work.
the russian 9,3x53R which is a copy of the 9,3 finnish is not to buy outside of mother russia. 8x50R Mannlicher works without any hassle but is complete obsolete if you cant get the .315 India ammo.
this are two cartridges I looking for some time to get only a collector sample without success.

there is an 7x53R Finnish iirc, a 7,62x53R case necked down for the 7mm caliber and in the 7x57 mauser class. the finnish 6,3x53R is more a small game round but the russian 6,5x54R is similar to the 6,5x55.

of course there are cases like 45/70 but they need a rebuild of the original magazine.
if you looking for something very special I need a a new chamber reamer for the 10,75x52R Springers in the future. the basic case for this obsolete round is 8x56R PRVI. it fire a 350 grains bullet at 620 m/sec but will handle 400 grains bullets for the 404 Jef. also.

Edelweiss;

Take a 91-30 and a front sight band from an M-39 Finn M/N. Chop the barrel and slide the sight down to where it stops.

Voila!

Perfect 23 inch barrel and a much handier rifle than the 91-30 due to the shorter barrel but also much handier than the 39 due to the thinner barrel walls of the 91-30.

Next, remove the Russky trigger and throw it as far away as you can. Or use it as a sinker for your trot line.

Replace with Finn M39 trigger.

File and polish the sear for better contact and you are all set.

Oh, yeah, forgot.

Chop the stock to where you want it, too.

ONE of the reasons that first drew me to the Mosin Nagant was the availability of cheap surplus ammo in a full power cartridge. Thankfully soft point hunting ammo is also available at affordable prices. So I think Im gonna stick with 762x54r.

As far as barrel lengths 20 inches (50cms) seems to work out perfectly for the full stock gun, since it will leave me the original "dog collar" escussions for looks and allow me to hang metal swivels through them as on the Finn capture guns. My plan (for now--who knows tomarrow) is to use the military barrel assuming it continues to shoot well. I'll remove the rear sight as well and replace both sights with something sporting with a 50's/60's flair.

For the half stock, I definetly want the octagonal barrel with a slim profile, 24inches (60cms) seems do-able. Im thinking a short stock length with a sling mount on the barrel.

Id like both guns to "feel" the same. To do that I wanna make both grips similar, either wood or metal (or horn).

Lanc:

I just chopped the original stock, rasped a Schnabel forend tip and branded it. Hung some hardware on it and it is done. I'll carry it on ski jaunts when the rain/snow/sleet makes glass sights a pain to keep wiped off.

So...the answer to your question is...

Yes! you don't have to spend thousands! LOL.

The Schnabel is a nice touch, now your making me think I might want one

Care to share what those stock markings are? Branding sounds like an interesting idea

Part of my wanting to do a custom M91/30 was because of it ruggedness, and even though it will cost me lots more than a stock Rem 700, etc when Im done, I wont be afraid to take in rough places during foul weather

A guy really could have a lifelong hobby of chopping and carving on these things...

The brand is a code for our place;

Abbreviation backward plus the cross and Trinity symbol, plus it reflects symbolically a broken tined bull elk I shot years ago.

I just burned it in the stock with a soldering iron.

There is also .375 or 9,5x52R wildcat version from 7,62x53R (called .375 Tyrvää or Tyrvae) designed in 90s.

10,75x52R Springer would be perfect choice for Steyr m95 sporter.
