Gibbs Summit

Apologize if there is another post on this I couldn't find it. I recently re-acquired a Gibbs Summit Carbine in .45-70. I bought it brand new in 2003 and had it for about two years before selling it to my father. He recently passed so I thought I would start using it again as a saddle gun or the like. My question is where to get a stock other than Boyd's? It currently has the Williams sight (mounted on a cant from the factory) , but there is NO cheek weld at all and beats the hell out of your face. The rifle is semi-rough but is a good basis to start from. I would like to end up with a two leaf express rear and decent looking wood but it will be getting knocked around some. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Can you post a picture? I have never seen a "Gib's Summit Carbine" let alone one in .45/70.

It is based on a Siamese Mauser?

You could Google Express Sights. There are a couple suppliers State's side. Brownell's has the one I used on my 14 bore rifle. It was $96.95 when I bought it in the white, in 1986 - but not much more than that now.

That's the beast all right. Some models did apparently have a Monte Carlo type stock albeit a poor excuse for one. I guess I thougt they were more well known? Thanks for helping out Ash, I appreciate it.

You can kind of see in the photo, the drop in the stock is pretty excessive. Your cheek ends up off of the wood for proper sight alignment and it smacks the crap out of you. I was just trying to see what my options were. I don't have the funds to go full custom and have a stockmaker build me anything. There has to be somewhere other than Boyd's that has something?

It is not very attractive an option, but you could always add a comb pad. I have one on my Model 54 Winchester. One day I want to re-stock it but for now it works (does grab the hearing protection from your head when shooting at the range).

tks all.

I have a spare #4 and a #3 that could be used with a choice of 2 chambers for my reamers. Oh yeah - I got away from .45's due to torn cartilage in my right shoulder - HA! Those pictures got me fired up - again because I had the actions.

I have a No.4 converted to .45-70. So far I'm using the original military surplus buttstock, which I'm not fond of at all. At one time there were quite a few sporter stocks around (and one from a No.1 can be modified to work with a No.4), but there are very few now, and most have a giant right-handed fugly Monte Carlo slab that does me no good at all.

Every now and then one of the old Bishop or Fajen stocks shows up on an auction site, but so far I've been outbid. Eventually I'll snag something I like.
