Pistol caliber on shotgun action
      #250027 - 06/07/14 01:57 AM

I have a customer talking about doing a shotgun to rifle conversion, but he wants a pistol caliber like .480 Ruger or .475 Linebaugh. Im very capable of doing the work, but the pressures and case thrust give a little concern. Has anyone else done this or has it been written about?

I would be concerned due to pressures usually over 55,000PSI with those - however - there are .458's and .375 belted DR's- but not on shotgun actions. Sorry- just thinking in print-

I've perhaps go for a larger case to give those handgun ballistics but keep pressures in line- ie: .45/70 would certainly do it and then a bunch more ballistics & with under 45,000SPI.

If more was needed, there are a lot of choices in case length from the .45/60's 1.9" length, out to 3.25".

My Sharps 1.9" in .45/60 develops 1,850fps with 405gr. at about 22,000PSI - but then, it has a 35" bl.

A longer case will give that in much shorter bls., of course.

...and for what it's worth - 45-70 is a pistol cartridge nowadays...

Two small data points.

In '08 or so, we converted an H&R 10 gauge single shot to .475. Firing pin was bushed, and a trigger job done, but that was about it for alterations to the action. The action never cracked, but the case head thrust quickly beat the standing breech concave. The rifle was retired after approximately 300 rounds.

About the same time, a friend converted another to shoot hot 45 Colt loads. I don't recall the exact loads used (could check, if needed) but I seem to recall thinking they were about the same as produced 1,300 fps w/300 gr. cast bullet in the 6-shot 45 Linebaugh I used to have. With over 1,000 rounds of this load, the rifle is doing fine.

what about 218 bee or 22 hornets both are great rounds and will out preform most pistol rounds on small game.

The .480Ruger is spec'd at a max pressure of 48kpsi. It's also based on the 45-70 case so it should produce similar thrust to a hot 45-70. As long as it's loaded to spec and not hot-rodded past it's intent, it seems like a good choice. And it's a real pistol round, unlike 45-70. 45-70 requires a pistol nearly as heavy as a rifle! And 480 is a capable big game round to boot.

I am the customer and we decided on 500 Linebaugh. The projectile diameter is the same as 500 NE, and it is a low pressure round. Linebaugh reports 30,000 psi. With case thrust like the 45-70. I will be shooting a 950 fps with a hard cast flat 435 grain bullet pistol load (for 7.5 inch barrel) that I am hoping/expecting to get me in the 1000-1100 fps from a 24 inch barrel. This load should still have about 800 fps at 100 yards according to online ballistics calculator. I would find it hard to believe that this load wouldn't put down any North American game animal with a well placed shot. The recoil should be extremely manageable in a rifle.

Sure is, here's mine. Ever heard a given pistol "will crack an engine block"? Well, if the engine block is a 2.5L from a 1988 S10 and the ammo is Hornady Leverevolution .45-70, it will. Punched a hole the size of my thumb in the #2 cylinder. Yes, I had a safe place to test it.

Sounds like a fantastic set up!

Do you have a 500 pistol already? And did you have Linebaugh build it?

.500 Linebaugh is based on the .348 case, is it not? Why not just go a bit longer and chamber .50/70 for the 2 3/4" case, or maybe a shortened .50Alaskan - or full length Alaskan at 2.090" trimmed, using Starline brass?

That will give you the ballistics you want at even lower pressures.

According to my 2004 Hodgdon Annual Manual, page 111, the .50 Alaskan, with a 22" bl. and Starline brass, will get up to:

:2,089fps w/435gr. LFN w/GC @ 35,500CUP and 1,912fps at only 26,100CUP

:1,940fps w/450gr. Barnes FP @ 35,300CUP and 1,772fps @ 28,600CUP

:1,854fps w/500gr. JFP @ 34,500CUP or 1,719fps @ 28,600CUP

:1,852fps w/525gr. LFN w/GC @ 34,800LUP and 1,724fps @ 27,300LUP

Sounds like a winner to me.

Sadly, I do not own a 500 pistol. I have a Freedom Arms 83 in .454 Casull. I would love to have a .454 rifle to match, but we were afraid the Chamber pressures would way too high. A hot loaded 454 round can get into the 60,000+ psi range! the 475 Linebaugh also has a high chamber pressure. Once Aaron builds the rifle I'll post pictures and review.

Back to a Linebaugh pistols… someday maybe. I keep looking on GB and GI. To get a true Linebaugh, you have to buy a perfectly good Ruger first and then scrap it. On the other hand, in comparison to double rifle prices, the $3000 pistol ain't nuthin

The thing is, I just didn't think of anything else. I am a big bore handgun shooter/hunter so I think I just naturally thought of a handgun cartridge. For example, I have a Marlin 1894 in .44 mag, and I have never had to shoot anything twice with it.

So when I became curious/obsessed with double rifles, I thought the barrels have to have really big holes, and at the same time something that is fun to shoot. With regard to 50-70 or 50 Alaskan, I don't handload, yet, and Buffalo Bore makes the exact ammo I want. Finally, I already purchased the ammo and sent it to Aaron who already has the stock blank. We're just waiting on the barrels.
