Naming the .600 [Re: Marrakai]
      #33879 - 26/06/05 11:49 PM

Marrakai,

Now, that's food for thought!

Since I'm Kamikaze, it might be more appropriate to call the .600, "Zero". The fighter airplane "Zero" being the explosive-laden destructive device that the Kamikaze pilot flew to destroy the target.

I see the parallel, but it doesn't have that massive sounding name like "Godzilla" or "Dragonslayer", etc.

Maybe, call it the "Devine Wind"?

Bob

On page 4 "African Hunter" 1 2005
there is a letter claiming to have
lost a 375 H&H Thompson Center
pistol "for elephant".

Was this the name for his pistol "for elephant"?

What about the "Howdah" pistols that were made in heavy calibres for elephant defense?

Richard.

Richard,

What about the Howdah pistols?

Are you referring to the antique Howdah pistols, or the Jurras Howdah pistols? The older Howdahs were loaded with black powder ammo. Lee Jurras made the .500 Jurras and only one (1) .577 Jurras; never anything like the Nitro Express rounds. I have fired all but the .577 Jurras, most of the big bore SSK calibers (including the very rare .588 JDJ) and found them to be relatively comparable to the .50-140 Sharps. I haven't fired the .600 Nitro yet.

Bob,

I was thinking of the Jurras Howdahs, I did not know he used his own proprietary cartridges for those. At the time he started making them, some of the articles written on them seemed to imply they were more powerful than the original blackpowder Howdahs. I remember the Elmer Keith column in Guns & Ammo wherein Keith stated that the .500 Howdah made by Jurras kicked too much because it touched the brim of his hat when he fired it. I got the impression Keith at the time had a serious case of the "not invented here" syndrome because he stated that his .44 magnum was the most powerful practical cartridge...and said the same in reference to Casull's .454 and heavy .45 Colt loads.

Richard.

Jurras Howdah vs. .600 Nitro Express [Re: rgp]
      #33944 - 27/06/05 03:18 PM

Richard,
I have fired all the calibers you mentioned, and many more.

Also, none of the Jurras Howdah pistols (unless custom ordered to be different) had muzzle brakes. My SSK/ Encore .50-140 Sharps has a muzzle brake which is NOT removable, so I don't know what the recoil would be without compensation.
My Van Horne / Encore .600 Nitro express DOES have a removable brake. Depending on my initial experience shooting the .600, will determine whether or not the brake stays on for the next shot.

Although not as terrifying, the only pistol to injure me was a .45-70 Gov't derringer (3" barrel). The hammer came back and cut my hand between thumb and index finger.

Bob,

The only reason I mentioned the Howdahs was for a potential name for the beastmaster...come to think of it, "Beastmaster" sounds like a suitable name.

Personally I'm sticking to my comfortable to shoot single action revolvers from Freedom Arms and Ruger, even though I plan to sell all of the remaining Rugers soon to pay for one more Freedom Arms revolver.

Still...if I had a useful right elbow I would consider something larger...maybe up to the level of a .500 Linebaugh.

If trying a pistol in .600 NE I'd be wearing a thick and heavy padded World War 2 flak jacket as issued to bomber crews, none of the thin kevlar bulletproof vest type, and would be wearing it on my head over a football helmet and would definitely leave the muzzle break in place and likely would wimp out before squeezing the trigger.

Richard.

Kamikaze:

I heard distance rumbling this past weekend. It could have been fireworks or thunder, but I just to cover all bases; did you fire that .600 yet? If so, I may have heard the blast here in Virginia...

Clark,

No, wasn't me. Waiting for my co-worker to get with me; it'll probably be sometime this week. I've picked up some bowling pins and a small stack of newspaper (may not be enough).

Prior reported tests with ballistic info on the .600 was that a 4-inch beef bone joint packed together with 5 feet of wet newspaper was used. The 900gr bullet went through the total package and destroyed everything. The bowling pin may not survive and 1-foot of newspaper.

I'll will post the pictures and a video clip (or two).

Bob

I'd love to see any pics/vids and read a detailed report of that weapon.

Are you planning on doing any hunting with that thing?

Clark,
Although I thought about going on a Safari (if I could ever afford it), I've never hunted and have no plans to do so.

I'm sure having this gun made for me is fulfilling some psychological void or disturbance in my life (in a masacistic sort of way). This could be a "pen-- envy", "mine is bigger than yours", or "keeping up with the Jone's" sort of manical egotistical thing.

I know, I've digressed rapidly to a Neanderthalic period in my genetic makeup.

To answer your question, no. But, I could make the .600 avalable for rent to those hunters who want to be the FIRST, to down a bull elephant with a handgun.

Everything being said, the closer I get to D-Day, the more apprehensive (and nervous) I get.

Bob

That would be cool in the field!

I feel the same way about big bore rifles. Saying I love them is an understatement--I'm addicted to them and can't get enough! My pop and I are having Butch build us a .577 double and I can't wait to pop that baby off!

In the mean time, I have to suffice my addiction with my lonely .500 NE....

Oh, the more I think about firing your .600, the more I believe that if I were the one squeezing the trigger, I would likey wear Depends...cause I know I would s**t myself after that recoil!

Rusty:

No, Kamikaze held onto the pistol; the guy was one of his friends.

The thing I love about that video is the guy starts off like he is going to shoot it with one hand...

vikram:

The thread we are talking about can be found here:

Kamikaze and the .600 NE pistol

(The link to the video can be found in the first post by Kamikaze.)

I would suggest first watching Kamikaze shooting it, then watch the other one.

A shooting classic....
