You can try SSK http://www.sskindustries.com/splash.htm if you donīt need CIP proofing. I once asked him to built a 577 NE, and he declined on CIP proofing.
If you need CIP proofing I know an austrian gunsmith, he made my #1 in 577 NE.

I posted some pics in the thread below

I UPDATED MY PROFILE,
I GUESS I KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT NE'S BUT WANT TO LEARN MORE.
FIRST QUESTION IS WHAT IS CID PROOF? IS THAT THE SAME AS A FFL(FEDERAL FIREARMS LICENCE)? SECOND IS WHAT IS THE DIIERENCE BETWEEN 577 AND 600 NE. POWER WISE? THIRD WHAT IS THE DIFF BETWEEN 600 JDJ OR 600 NE ? I AM NEW TO THE NITRO EXPRESS LINE BUT WANT TO LEARN ALL I CAN. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP. I HAVE MAKDE IT A PERSONAL QUEST TO HAVE SOME CUSTOM BUILD ONE.

Hi msorenso,
CIP is the european standard for dimensioning cartridges incl. specs for max pressure and test procedures. Every single barrel of every gun is proof tested with 30% over the max. pressure given for a specific cartridge.
I donīt know what FFL is, but I know that the american pendant is SAAMI. As you live in the US, you donīt need CIP proofing.
The 577 NE fires a 750 grain bullet at ~2050 ft/s. It started as a Black Powder cartridge. With the availability of Nitro powder (in that times cordite) the cartridge shell has been beefed up and a extremly powerfull cartridge was the result.
The 600 NE fires a 900 grain bullet at about the same velocity, but was yet designed for Nitro powder.
The 600 JDJ is a propriatery cartridge of SSK. He uses the same 577 cartridge shell, straighten it and fires a 600 NE bullet.
The problem with the Ruger #1 is the action size.
The barrel needs to be strong enough to withstand the generated pressure. The chamber for such a big cartridge will not left much material around the area where the barrel is threaded into the action. (see my pics). You will need a barrel made out of the best steel available.
For me the 577 is really all I need and is one of the best stoppers in the world. I tell you my gun could be a bit heavier as it kicks like a mule. ;-)
I understand that you want the biggest caliber at a reasonable price, but it is IMHO a good advice to shoot some of the bigger cartridges before you start.
br Tom

I'm sure you'll find several capable gunsmiths (makers) capable of making the conversion, but a 600 in a single shot is going to be light on weight and a brutal ride for the unconditioned (and even for most of the conditioned as well.) Worse yet, you 'll probably end up with a muzzle break on it, which will make the experience argueably even worse.

There are several smaller "nitro expresses" availible (with easier-to-find and less expensive components) that would no doubt result in more pleasant ownership and shooting of such a gun.

We're talking smokeless powder.

Kynoch is the only mfg that i know of offering readily available 600 ammo.

They will cost you $144.00 from Galazans for 5, yes five. That's $30.00 every time you pull the trigger.

Unprimed brass is about $8-$10 per round from Midway (Bertram or A-Square).

Woodleighs will run you about $1.50 to $1.70 (softs & solids) per round.

Set of RCBS dies = $375.00.

Figure you end up with $3K in the gun and buy a set of dies (375) and 50 rounds of brass (500)... your in at roughly $4K and haven't even loaded a round yet.

If you WANT one - then get one, but know that owning and feeding one is not an inespensive proposition.

600 JDJ [Re: new_guy]
      #25597 - 03/02/05 10:50 AM

Thanks for all the help! I think I will go with either 577 or 600jdj. ONE thing though 577 has a straight case correct? How do they neck it up to 600jdj. If any has a pic that would also be great. All of you have taught me so much. Thanks again!

577 is slightly tapered.

Second from right, and right is the 600JDJ.

Westley Richards offers .600 NE factory ammo for $119 for a box of 5 rounds. HOlland & Holland also offers it, but they want about $250 for 5 rounds.

G' day from the U.S.A.!

I'm new to this forum (1st posting).

The Thompson Encore will handle the .600 Nitro cartridge but the barrel blank has to be custom made for the gun maker (very expensive).

I have an SSK Encore .50-140 sharps (3-1/4") (smokeless) pistol with 16" barrel (stainless). I've loaded both 535 gr Woodleigh jacketed bullets, and 700 gr BMG bullets. It's actually pleasant to shoot (at least my psycho-analyst said I'm cured ).

I am presently having made a .600 Nitro pistol on the Encore frame (16" stainless) (maybe, I'm NOT SO CURED ). The 16" barrel is costing me US$1026.50 (WITHOUT sights or muzzle brake). The barrel blank cost the gun maker US$521.50 (for 18.5"), so for a rifle barrel (26" & up), well, you do the math.

When the pistol is done and I've shot it, I'll post some info. and maybe pictures if someone shows me how to do that without the benefit of my own webpage.

Let me know what you all think.

Bob

Marrakai,

Well, I'm about to keep my promise.

Just received my .600 Nitro Express PISTOL . The barrel was made by Dave Van Horne, on a T-C Encore Stainless frame, Weaver Recoil Proof scope, Horneber brass, Woodleigh 900 gr jacketed bullets, Beartooth 1040gr lead bullets, Hodgdon 4831 powder, Mag Rifle Primers.

The pistol weighs about 7 pounds.

I will be meeting up with a co-worker who is a member of an outdoor shooting club, on the range sometime before next week. I will test the reduced loads first, to get a reality check on the recoil. Then, if I'm still able, will fire the full house loads (both the 900gr/160gr H4831 and the 1040gr/117gr reduced load).

Since I don't have my own web page, if you or someone on this forum will show me how to post the still images, and video clip on this site, I will do so.

Chances are, I will only have one "shot" at this (no pun intended). I have 3 co-workers willing to try the full house loads, but maybe NOT after they see the results of MY shooting it.

We'll see,

Let me know what you guys think.

I suspect the muzzle-blast from 160gr of 4831 in a 16-inch barrel will rival a solar flare!
Gotta see that video clip!
Hopefully, John (NitroX) can host it here somewhere.

Anyone else here reckon a construction hard-hat would be a good idea for that first shot?

Alan,

There has been discussion between the 4 of us who will probably pull the trigger (and I'm the only one committed to doing so) as to any personal protection required. (i.e. - shatter-proof goggles, full-face helmet, padded shooting gloves, or maybe having someone else shoot it in proxy.

We're also debating on the target - bowling pins, concrete blocks, tree trunk, pumpkins, 56-inches of wet newspaper, small boulders, etc.

Forgot about the muzzle blast. Oh well, too late now. Will have to shoot it indoors with the lights out and video the muzzle flash.

I've heard of a .50 cal. handgun club (not sure where it's at) so I'm Thinking about a .60 cal (smokeless) Handgun club, What do you think? It will probably a very small club. The guy in Austria, myself, and possibly my 3 co-workers.

Has anyone else shot the .600 N.E. in a pistol (or something similar)?

Bob

Kamikaze,

How about a picture of this contraption. Maybe you could be holding it with a big possum-faced grin before shootiing, then an action pic of the first shot, and then a pic of the rescue squad cleaning up!

.600 Nitro Express Pistol Pics [Re: CptCurl]
      #33850 - 26/06/05 01:26 AM

Curl,

Sooooooooo Funnnnnny! Actually, since I'm a cop, the flack jacket (ballistic vest) was one of the suggestions for protective gear.

I've attached links for the pics (video to come later) of this pistol. I haven't decided what to call it yet, "Dragonslayer", "Beast", "Thing", "Big Bertha", (any suggestions)?.

600 Nitro
600 Nitro Stamping
600 Nitro Ammo
600 Nitro Bore

Come to think of it, I haven't named the other pistol yet. My other pistol, a SSK-Encore .50-140 Sharps (also smokeless), was a respectable handful the first time I shot it. They'll make a formible pair of dueling pistols (a slap in the face anyone?)!

Dueling Pistols
50-140 Ammo

"Mutt & Jeff", "Yin & Yang", "Dumb & Dumber"?

Maybe, I should wait until I shoot this thing . . . . I might just call it "SOLD"!

I'm open to suggestions , thinking about having them inscribed with the names.

Bob (Kamikaze)

Kamikaze,

What are your loads for the .50/140?

I think if I were you I'd be developing a light cast bullet load. . . but that would ruin the whole concept, wouldn't it?

Good luck,

Curl,

I use 50.7 gr of Accurate Arms 5744 with a Woodleigh 535gr jacketed SP bullet. If I remember correctly, 50gr with the 590gr Beartooth lead bullet.
