Caught napping
      #255252 - 16/10/14 11:10 AM

I found a young fella that came out of a thick gully bottom last night,it was just on dark but I managed to capture a few pics of him...its far later than it looks with the camera ISO cranked to the max. Not a great pic but a great cam capture I thought.

I had my 308 Norma Mag loaded with 180 Gr Woodleigh Hydro`s in my claw and on originally sighting him rubbing with his antlers flashing in the foliage I thought "why not" but on further examination he was let go and I videoed him instead. I want a look at his old man.

You shooot a .308 Norma? I'm just having one built now. It's on an M1917. Got a scope today for it, Nikko Stirling 4-12x42. The price was right (read: Free). The scope, not the rifle!

This photo speaks loudly for Gryph as few would turn this fellow down. But maybe next year?

Ash I have had my 308NM for prob 25 years or close to it.Its a hammer of a cartridge too and I have a heap of the hydros to feed it.
It wears a 4-12-50 Swaro and was basically built up for a bit of 'cross gully ' work with a 26" S/barrel.

I have its big mate, the 358NM as well,a hell of a round that unfortunately a lot of people dont know a great deal about or have forgotten. Its a hydro hammer too and I have only just got the plastic tipped hydros loaded for it.I have killed sambar with the original hydros no problem, theses should be the ducks nuts too.

Daryl is the man that has lots of the goss on them.

Sorry for thread hijack - Whats a nice flat shooting load out of it? Mines got a 24" barrel. Wonder if the smiths started yet? He said 2-3 weeks a few weeks ago, but checked last week and he hadn't started so *shrugs*. I was thinking the Sierra 168gr game kings, they're not too expensive, if i recall.

For heavier game, like Sambar, I would suggest a more heavily constructed bullet than a Sierra, especially one that will be going over 3,000fps.

For a practice bullet, save money, for a hunting bullet - none of them are too expensive.imho

From memory (?) my reloading mate has them done at 67 grains of 2209 for the 180`s I seem to remember asking him for middle of the road rounds..over to you Daryl as I dont know wtf they would be doing speed wise.

If indeed ADI2209 is H4350 (I think so), according to my cross-reference chart my data shows 67.0gr. as mid way between Lee's starting load with a 180gr. at 65.0gr. at 2,770fps and their listed maximum of 69.0gr. at 2,999fps at 62,577PSI.

This data is from the Second edition of Richard Lee's manual - everyone should have it on their loading manual shelf. They are not expensive ($22.00 CDN) but have much more data than most other handbooks.

Great photo Gryph......thanks for posting. Having only managed a couple of 19" stags over the years I would have decked that fella had I been you ......so thanks for leaving him be........perhaps someone in my boat will get a chance at him one day.

What is that line down his body do you think? It almost looks like an old scar from an encounter with a barbed wire fence. Or was he moulting?

Thanks mate.

GG

GG that lateral line is the 'tide mark' from where he has been in a watery wallow, the ghost look whitish mud is dried mud on his face, usually indicative of a wallow under tree ferns as they are often black mud that will often dry to a grey.

I posted this bloke from another area a while back and he has a tide mark too.
Btw sometimes those 19" models are as tough to get as their big brothers.
After my health issues this year I got back to a bit of walking and rolled a 20" model ( a real cull) after not having a rifle in my hand for 1/2 a year..it really was a salvation stag to me and most would never look at it twice but it means more to me personally than either of the pictured stags.
This fella has a still wet look.

I watched four young stags last night they were 750 yards as the laser flies but about 1.5 k`s as the feet stumble.

I would have liked to have been much closer to take some pics and if one had been a good length i would have made the trip down, then of course back up the mother of a hill climb.

Goodness me! You have deer everywhere. I've only seen deer twice, both as roadkill.

Ah.......roger, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation mate. God they are a fine looking animal.

Cheers.

GG I lived on the GC Qld for over six years and although it was never enough trip wise I did fly and also drive down to hunt in Vic.
Its a pain yes this tyranny of distance in Aus but we manage to get over it if the lure at the end is enticing enough. You have done well to travel from I/State and take sambar.

Ash, JG lives in deer country but is also out most mornings, so puts in the hours, which add up to all these photos, and sightings and of course knowledge. Makes it all look wasy.

Pretty good photos for 750 yards. What lens are you using? Tripod?
