My .500NE has arrived
      #255375 - 17/10/14 08:09 PM

Hi all, new to the site. I'm new to big doubles, but not big bores. Just got a call from the gun shop that my Merkel 140AE .500 NE has turned up and l was told it looks sweet. I have always wanted a double and eventually bit the bullet, (excuse the pun) after my last trip to the NT two weeks ago. The rifle I bought was the one that was on Used Guns up until last week. I had a choice of three rifles, two 470's and the .500. I wanted ejectors and one of the 470's had extractors and the other whilst it had ejectors it was a pretty plain Jane base model. The .500 had ejectors and upgraded wood, so the choice was made. I was not too concerned about picking between the two calibre's as they will both do the job admirably. If there was two identical doubles in the two calibre's, I'd still be trying to make up my mind.

I have always used a .404 I built a few years ago and .338 Win Mag, both are awesome on Buff, but one cannot have enough guns, can one?

Anyway, that's enough excited prattling from me. Now I just have to go through the usual rubbish from the WA firearms branch and the one month plus wait.

BillG500,

Welcome to NE.com!

Your Merkel is a good choice. I have been an ambassador for the current-production Merkel double rifles for a long time. I bought the third .500NE that Merkel made; a Model 140-2, s/n A 500003.

That was over 10 years ago. I've fired hundreds of rounds and it is barely broken in. It's very accurate and fits me well. If you look up older posts here you will see I have crowed about it from time to time.

Let us see some photos and do give reports on how she does.

Seeing your enthusiasm for your 500 Merkel made me reach into the back of my safe and select my Merkel 500 to admire the good value and practicality they offer. Maybe one day we will be able to fire a few shots and compare their performances.

CptCurl you would be welcome in Western Australia at any time. I would dig a little deeper into the gun cabinet to see what other goodies may be hiding there.

I went to the gun shop today at lunch time and had an in the flesh look, and I'm impressed. Nice dark timber with plenty of figure, and the wood to metal finish is very good also. I'm very happy with how it looks and can't wait to get it in my grubby little hands on it eventually. I will post some photos when I get it home so I can show off. Will be a bit like show and tell.

The joys of living in Western Australia have slowed up my getting my .500 NE.
The Firearms branch believed I didn't need a .500 double even though I gave them all the information required and followed the application process to the letter.
I have since employed the services of a Barrister to attend the State Arbitration Tribunal against the Commissioner of Police so I can eventually get the rifle I purchased. Whilst this has taken time and will also empty my wallet, I will eventually get the rifle.
In hind site I should of applied for it on a club licence as I am a member of the BGRC, so I could of at least had it by now, but I wanted this rifle on an open license as I go to the Territory regularly to hunt. I was a bit worried they would want me to get rid of one of my other rifles to get this one, but so far so good. There is another SAT hearing towards the end of the month, so hopefully a decision will be made then.
It has been a long and slow process, being a stubborn bastard helps
I will update with a bit of a range report when I do eventually get it, but it will be biased I'm afraid, just like every new parent believes their child is the best one yet.

BillG, we've always heard WA was tough getting things through - sounds like BS is an understatement over your way! Keep up the pressure mate & I hope you have your day in court soon.
Must be a right royal pain unable to take "baby' home, there's plenty of loads here to choose from here; CptCurls one above a great one for starters!
GW's nitro for black load is sheer dynamite on pigs & in a mate's double up here in NQ shoots rapid L & R just touching off hand at 25m - witnessed it myself, young Drew is a far, far better shot than me! Will make the trip to the territory with all that more sweet when you can with your lucky bugger!
All the best mate

BillG500

Sorry to hear of the troubles.

Our firearms laws are to change here in SA, and the Police have been enforcing the purpose of use requirement a lot more for centrefires. Hopefully we are not going to go the same way .... However at a meeting to discuss the new legislation to be drafted, I was raving to one of the Police Officers about the justifications for a new rifle and he stated I had just given him several legitimate justifications. So perhaps it may not be as bad as it might be thought, I hope.

WA continues to be the worst in the bunch. Hope you soon find joy in your purchase.

Bill,

With Rick Mazza in parliament these things should slowly become easier. I'm sure he'd like to hear of your experience.

Unfortunately WA has long been off my list of places to live. I can't decide whether WA stands for "Windy Always", "Wait Awhile" or "Wankers and Arseholes" - at least for WAPOL.

Best of luck with your hearing, the more often they are challenged and lose, the easier it should be to have their attitude "adjusted".

What a damn shame! I am yet to hear of a thug using a .500NE double rifle in a holdup. If there is a weapon less amenable to criminal mischief than this I would like to know what it is.

Maybe it is a west coast thing. Our state of California has become very repressive in regard to firearms ownership.

Stick to the fight and come out the winner. Keep us informed. Good luck!

GOOD NEWS !!!!!!
Just got a phone call from the Barrister, WAPOL have decided that I can now have my rifle, which means it won't have to go to court again. (Which would of been the third time).
Bloody wrapped at the moment. So now I'm just waiting for them to mail out the paper work and I can go and pick it up.
I must of had a premonition on the weekend as I loaded up 20 rounds (with bottom lip dragging on the ground) so I would be ready to go when I eventually got it. So now the bottom lip has been picked back up and I'm walking around with a silly grin on my face.
I'll post some pics of the rifle when I get it and some of how it shoots as well.

That's great news, I can't imagine living in place where you cannot own a rifle like that.

Bill, must be all the good vibes your way - great to hear mate & looking forward to the range report & photos (hopefully)
Glad you had a win! If any poor bugger in WA does the same thing then he has a point of contact in the legal profession that can handle a problem that would leave the common man out in the cold.
Having a real crappy time at work due to work load, come home, read this.....made my day!

Good news Bill.

WAPOL is known for reading shooting forums so you never know who was reading. BUT I am sure the Barrister was what got them to "hurry up" a proper decision. From "don't know" or "don't feel like approving it" to on a barrister's questioning - "aah we don't have any real justifications for refusing this".

Glad you finally got your rifle ,but having to employ a Barrister !!!!!!!!!! unbelievable ,it took me nearly 6 months to get two actions for building a 600 NE in QLD .i have read [i know i will get flamed for this one ] that WA is called ''little Israel '' and they dont like guns or hunting ,hence WA has always been hard on firearms owners there
