Single 4 or Double 8?
      #255281 - 16/10/14 10:47 PM

Out of interests sake, what would you prefer? A single barrel 4 bore or a double 8 bore? Vintage or modern, any action style etc, just which would you prefer?

I'd rather a...OH it's terribly hard to choose.. Probably the single barrel 4 bore. Never used a 4 or an 8, But i'd rather the 4 hanging on the wall, at least.
Single 4 or Double 8?
You may choose only one
Single Barrel 4 Bore
Double Barrel 8 Bore

My choice was a double 8-bore. Two shots, available, compared to a single 4-bore where the "gun bearer" carried the additional gun.

Some writers from those days considered the 8-bore adequate. With a 4-bore possibly contributing to physical harm to the shooter over time.

In the meantime before the mystical hidden 8-bore turns up, I will have to settle for my patheticly small 10-bore.

Double 8 no hesitation.
Even if the second shot isn't needed on the first animal - there may be another.

I have made both.
I vote for the double 8.

Why?

Because I have fired the 4s before.

(I know what they are like......................)

Besides, a double 8 does all I could ever want, has 2 shots and weighs quite a bit less.

I voted 8bore double too.
I still vow that some day I will have an 8 and that anything bigger, especially a 4bore, is very much a "stunt" gun.
The 8bore H&H that Champlins has is one of the few I have actually handled and boy, do I wish I could have taken that thing home!

I voted 8 bore double. I've shot a 4 bore, and hope to never do so again.

I voted 8 as well, but would never fire one off my right shoulder. Too buggered.

For the historical value alone:
Double eights were the common elephant rifles for both India and Africa up to the turn of the previous century, and were then carried as heavy backup rifles well into the nitro era.
At the time everybody had one!

...whereas I get the distinct impression you could count the number of historical 4-bore users on the fingers of one hand.

Besides, I just love SxS doubles!

Uhhh...how about both?!

I know 4 singles were much rarer than doubles but have got to think an 8 double for "normal" use with a 4 single for backup situations where you are only going to get one shot anyway (tall grass, etc)would have been a much better/lighter/more affordable combination. That said, I shoot my 4 single much much more than my 8 mostly because it is bigger, no regulation to deal with so easier to use a variety of loads, and because smokeless powder takes most of the pain and abuse out of it.

Good on ya, Bob. My eyeballs are still spinning.

Lt. James Forsyth (1850's) worked with a double 8 prcussion rifle using explosive "shells" he called the bullets, for use on tiger and other animals in India. He designed a number of different moulds for these "Shells". His book included notes on their effect on tigers - all fatal. What was interesting, was the varying powder charges depending on the game hunted, so the bullet exploded at the correct time during penetration.
