Hunting with my Mauser 9.3x62

I recently bought Tentmans Mauser Oberndorf Type B in 9.3x62. I recently took it on a hunting trip to the Kaikoura ranges in the South Island of New Zealand. We saw a wide range of game, Red deer, Chamois, Pigs and Goats. It is steep, scubby country more suited to long range shooting.

The only animal close enough for a shot was a billy goat at 75yds. One 286gr Norma round to the shoulder dropped it on the spot.

I hope to take a few more animals with this rifle.

Nice country and very nice rifle. My nephew shot his 14" trophy Tahr at only 100m in steep alpine country in South Westland so you never know when a close shot will present itself. Open sights? depends how good your eyes are, plenty of game have been shot at long range with open sights but the scope sight sure helps when the ranges are longer or light getting poor. A lighter bullet in the 9.3 would help with the longer range shots, but then if you know your rifle and load, the heavy bullet will do the job too.

Hope your 9.3 scores a few more.

I tried some 232gr Norma Oryx factory loads, but they shot very high (10+ inches at 100 yds) with the open sights. I've only shot at 100 yds so far, but I think 150 -200 yds should be do-able, just need some more practice.
I had thought about putting a scope on it, but it hasn't had one for the last 90 years so I figured it wouldn't be right to put one on now.

With open sights, 200 is easy, 300 is easily doable with some practice.

Good stuff. I would really like to get back into goat hunting in the Flinders Ranges locally. Not as pretty as your mountains and certainly lower, but beautiful in their arid sage green and ochre looks. Some old stinkies would be good fun.

Long barrel on that rifle for sure. 9.3x62 would be limited a little in the range stakes for mountain hunting but still capable.

I don't have too many closeups, let me know what you want.

The serial number shows it was made in 1924/25. I understand for most of that time it was owned by a farming family in then Rhodesia. I imagine it shot most african game in that time. The family eventually moved to NZ when the situation in Zimbabwe changed. They then moved to Australia, but sold the rifle before they moved.
The stock and metalwork wear their signs of use. I can only imagine how the scars were earned. The tangent sight has been filed out to more of an express sight with a wide V. It does make longer range shots harder but would be perfect for brain shots on elephant at 10yds! The rifle came with some very old solid rounds so I don't think that is wishful thinking!
