A friend brought a brand new one of these down to the BGR shoot last weekend.

While I prefer the looks of a side by side, this rifle certainly wasn't shabby. I was taken back by how light it was and thought that this would equate to lots of movement upon firing, but was surprised to watch him during a match and see that there was almost no muzzle flip - even from the top barrel.

I had a couple of shots with it afterwards and it was a dream to shoot:
1. I found the sights instantly;
2. The fore-end was of good size and easy to hold (like most O/U I suppose);
3. The recoil was straight back (okay in this cartridge) and finding the sights for the second shot was very quick.
[4. The single trigger was a tad heavy though.]

I like the look of the splinter fore-end on my Merkel side by side, but gloves are a must - I learned how hot they get when I shared my rifle with a friend at the 2011 Nationals, he shot it first so it was already stinking hot when I got hold of it. Still, black powder is much worse for generating heat....

Do you know which model? Some can be very well priced.

At the Vic. big game shoot recently one of the competitors had a Fabarm Asper U/O DR in 9.3x74 and I found the same thing.

I had a couple of shots with it afterwards and it was a dream to shoot:
1. I found the sights instantly;
2. The fore-end was of good size and easy to hold (like most O/U I suppose);
3. The recoil was straight back (okay in this cartridge) and finding the sights for the second shot was very quick.

U/O double rifles are a bit under rated here in Australia even though they are far more affordable than a S/S DR and comparable to a lot of the better bolt action rifles. The quality is normally very good and they come with ejectors. I personally love them.

I'm not sure - he's a regular and will ask him next time. Actually next time will be the QLD State Titles towards the end of October. I'll take some photos. He also has a very nicely finished CZ550 in 450Rigby.

Thanks. I don't know if I saw one of these when over there. Though I did see some U/O's they were much engraved. My photos if I ever dig them out will reveal.

Mauser&9mm - where are the state titles?


I like the concept of doubles in U/O configuration only in certain calibers, the 9.3x74 being the major one.

Up at Fraser Coast, Maryborough. Good range and excellent running of it. They also held the Nationals there last July - there's a post here on NitroExpress with a link to some photos.

I've posted a link to the SSAA website with some information and link to the nomination form. Hope you can make it. It's always good to have a big crowd, it's a ton of fun and there's some really fine firearms (and shooters too of course):

I know there are countries that allow the 9.3mm calibers as an exception to the regs that .375 or larger is the minimum for the big five, has anyone ever taken buffalo or elephant with one of these? There are much more affordable doubles in 9.3x74mm than almost any other chambering(that's suitable for the biggest game), Zoli makes a nice o/u which I like. Caesar Guerini, who makes my favorite o/u shotguns, makes a double rifle now in 9.3x74mm though I have yet to handle one.

You are correct, most countries and provinces require a .375 or above for cape buffalo, elephant, rhino. Lion and leopard are often different, and have lesser requirements. Some South African provinces allow a 9.3mm. Namibia has an energy requirement. Its listed on more than a few posts on NE.

A 9.3x74R will kill a cape buffalo fine. I know some people who have used it. I haven't on cape buffalo but have shot fourteen water buffalo with it. Water buffalo are slightly harder to kill than cape buffalo, IMO, but less aggressive, per some people's comments which is probably true.
