I got invited to go elk hunting in montana. Has anyone here hunted Elk in Montana, and if so would you have any suggestions?
Do's or dont's?

I missed it. I hunted mountains north of White Sulpher Springs and the Sweetgrass Hills as a resident.

Elk hunting for nonresidents in Montana is a drawing. The competition for tags if fierce and expensive. In case you don't know Montana is a big place. Roughly 400 miles by 700 miles. Lots of places to hunt, but you better know where you want to go first. I would not drive out from KY without knowing where you are going or if there are elk there.

Your best bet is to contact some outfitters. Outfitters have special tags available.

You night try to get to get to this show. There will be a bunch of the Montana boys there.

You may be too late to enter the draw for an out of State tag for this next season. Your best bet is to book with an outfitter who has guide tags left...they are EXPENSIVE! I've done OK just NW of Dillon...but get a guide.

I hunt in the NW corner of MT, around Libby, but it is tough hunting in that part of the State. I have a small house in Libby...

Good luck and let everyone know how you do.

The area on the north shore of Ft. Peck Lake has some huge bulls, but drawing a rifle tag is very tough. Plenty of archery tags though.
