Elephant steamrolls rhino mom

the culprit was an elephant bull in musth who found a rhino and her calf crossing his path undesirable.

So, what did he do?

Well, according to photographer Louis Kok, he just steamrolled right over them. While the calf managed to get away, the mother was less lucky and sustained serious injuries.

Kok apparently reported the incident to the section ranger of the unnamed park and found out that the elephant had been responsible for a number of similar attacks in the past.

Sadly, the female black rhino died a few days later, but the story has a semi-happy ending, as the calf was spotted with a new herd not too long after.

My thoughts too.

Impressive to see but if this is a trait with this particular Ele, it need culling.

Hi John

Yesterday I saw a far more dramatic picture of this contest in a mainstream magazine "Match" which quotes the photographer : Louis and Marthe Kok /Abaka
If that can help.

I have no soft spot for rhinos that are among the dumbest animals on earth. But they now are precious and rare critters, moreover a calf was at tow. This bull is a registered killer, he should be cropped ASAP. At that a poor trophy, a one tusker perhaps because of his short fuses, and the remaining tusk is broken. A psychopath??????

Knowing he is a killer it would be a great challange to stand your ground and drop him close to yourself.

The good news are that an aggressive elephant is more easy to locate as he might aggress You, one has just to let his scent drift to him.

In Addo Elephant Park in South Africa we were chased by an elephant for a long long way. We were in a Landcruiser, and driving along a track and an elephant was following us at a run. Didn't take a lot of notice, but then noticed it was still there some time later and getting closer. The driver sped up and left him (or her) behind. It was definitely chasing the vehicle. I was disappointed as it could have made some good film footage but I suppose better than letting the elephant catch up with us.

Guess it was annoyed at the vehicle for some reason. If on a foot safari a good reason to have a competent guide with a rifle. This Landcruiser did have a big bore bolt action, but it was tucked away under the seat. The guide showed it to me because he knew I was a hunter and had been hunting elephants in Zimbabwe before we were at Addo.

In Zim while hunting lion, we were tracking when we came on a younger bull..he turned and gave us a look for a bit then decided he didn't want us around much and came at us..we all spread out and trotted away for a ways, looked back and he was still coming only faster and getting closer..we ran faster and longer, stopped and looked, he was still coming..that's when the game scout let a round fly next too the PH and I..the bull stopped but wasn't too sure the PH wasn't going to kill the game scout for shooting so close to our heads...

Another time we were sneaking into a blind for hyena, was still dark when a tuskless cow with calf coming blowing out of the brush at us..we hit our flashlights and started yelling while backing up..after what seemed I am sure longer than it was she stopped and turned around leaving with her calf..she has stopped at 8 yards..close enough for me..

They can move amazingly fast for being as big as they are..

It was reported years ago that a one or more herds of "feral" elephants, mostly males, had been culled in southern Africa. They were engaging in these random attacks on other animals, rhinos particularly. They were so destructive and badly socialized there was no alternative but to cull them.

It was concluded by the experts that they were a group of orphaned young elephants who had banded together after their herds had been destroyed by poachers. Basically they were a collection of traumatized individuals who were without adult supervision during their formative years. The result was remarkably like humans, except that we engage in self-culling.

Nut whole elephant herds are culled every year, eg in Zimbabwe. A cull was to happen to Dinga (I think it was?) on Lake Kariba when I was there to hunt elephants. A herd of about forty elephants was to be culled. I was asked whether I wanted to participate. Yes I said. But of course permission is rarely granted.

Zim Parks do not publicise the culling, rarely allow outsiders, and never journalists, since a BBC crew did a dirty of them years ago. Pretending to give a balanced story, but just wrote a carnage, hate article instead for sensationalism and tabloid level reporting.
