Bar in wood action
      #253325 - 08/09/14 08:51 PM

Ive seen a few doubles, mostly older, that have an action that is referred to as a bar-in-wood action, can anyone explain the specifics of what makes these different than the common back actions or boxlocks? I noticed the cross pin isn't visible as it usually would be, is that the difference that the stock wood covers the front section of the action?

The bar in wood actions are certainly beautiful guns. They may have been an attempt to capture the clean lines of a muzzleloader.

The sides of the action bar are cut away to allow a space for the wood. The wood in these areas is quite delicate, and unfortunately prone to cracking. The action bar itself is usually wider and a little deeper, with sometimes more metal behind the detonators. This is to get the same action bar cross section for strength. They may end up, in some cases, heavier than a solid bar action.

Occasional examples are still made today.

MikeRowe: thank you for the clarification, at first I though the action bar might be held by the wood but that would not hold together.
NitroX: very nice, Westley Richards is my hands down favorite British bespoke gunmakers. Have you shot the 10 bore? I'm guessing its a black powder proof, I'm curious how well the lock-up is after almost a century and a half.

Most bar in wood guns by other gunmakers leave the hinge pin area uncovered, that is some metal is visble there. The Westley-Richards 10 bore shows their proprietary Crab Joint, covered by Westley -Richard's British patent 2506 of 1862.

Getting the WR 10-bore shooting is on the list, pretty much at the top, after a couple of easier ones.

The 10-bore needs some stuff imported.

Close friend of mine has a bar and wood 16 bore Westley Richards 'pelter' refurbished in the 1970's by H&H. . Like brand new - perfect. I might be able to get a picture- will have to see.

Tha MacNaughton 'Edinburgh' bar in wood is quite attractive, but I have only ever seen shotguns and never a double rifle

Beautifful guns! The new John Dickson company and Philippe Ollendorf both make them. Shotguns only.
