.416 Rigby vs .54 Sharps
      #253127 - 04/09/14 03:01 AM

I had occasion to take my new Ruger #1 in .416 Rigby, and my Sharps, Hartford model,.54cal 'Paper Cutter' (loaded with about 80 gr. BP) to the range and fire them for fun. I fired the Ruger offhand, military sling style grip, and the Sharps bench style. For whatever reason, I must say the Sharps had greater 'felt recoil' than the .416. My Daughter-in-law made a video of the Ruger and I was surprised to see the muzzle climb, though not perceived. And at about 75 yds, pretty darn accurate for open sights! Pic also shows my Mauser action .270, set triggers. Great fun throwing big lead down range!

It's always a good day when you blow some gun powder. Aroma therapy!

Great day at the range.
The percussion Sharps are fun to shoot. I used to shoot a bare slug and loose powder in the one I had, an Italian version, civilian sporting 1/2 stock model - 120gr. 2F, and a 450gr. FN bullet, that I tapered in a 6.5x68 seater die. That made it fit the chamber perfectly, but of course really increased the powder capacity.

They are fun to shoot - and accurate too. Shot a nice little muley buck with that rifle one fall - bullet went lengthwise then exited, of course.

They aren't just plinkers - fun to hunt as well.
