Oberndorf Type S and Brno 22F
      #253093 - 03/09/14 05:58 AM

I bought these for very reasonable prices at a relatively small local gunshow last weekend, a 1914 Oberndorf Mauser Type S 7x57 and a 1948 Brno 22F 8x57JS. Can someone identify the scope for me? I don't know much about early American scopes. Weaver? I can't find any markings on it. It seems to be a 2.5X. Reticle is one horizontal line and a tapered post. Its actually very clear and perfectly positioned for rapid target acquisition. Both bores are very good. All matching numbers on both. Blue on both seems all original and at least 90%. The Brno maybe a bit less. Very well maintained working rifles.

It is interesting to note that unlike my near new cond. 1945 Brno 22F this 1948 Brno has no guide rib and the clip loading slot is not cut. (Last photo is of the 1945 22F and you can clearly see that it has a guide rib and clip loading slot).

To me it looks like a Weaver K2.5 or K 3. My K3 is inscribed "WEAVER / K3-1 USA" exactly where your's is covered by the rear mount ring. My K2.5 is very faint inscribed, hardly visible, on the left side, below the elevation adjustment turret "WEAVER / K2.5-C3 / USA."

Thanks. It hadn't occurred to me that the name of the scope was covered. Of course. There seems no way to install a different scope without dismantling it first, so I guess I'll just leave scope and mount well enough alone. As is, this is a very nice useful set up.

It looks like a Weaver to me as well.

I love gun shows like that.

If you are not familiar with the Pachmayr mount, you may not be aware that the top part of the mount can be detached and reattached by manipulating the knurled knob mounted on the axis of the hinge. Top parts of Pachmayr mounts are not that hard to find and interchange with the bases without special fitting, so if you want to change scopes, you can do so simply be substituting a new top part for the one presently on the rifle. No, I'm not very familiar with this mount. This top part doesn't split, therefore the scope has to be inserted from one end, therefore the scope has to be partially dismantled to fit. I guess there are other types of top parts that do split. I'll keep my eyes open for them.

I had the Mauser out of the stock so I took a couple of pictures of the barrel stamps under the wood. Not sure what they all mean.

Hello rpeck,

Very nice rifles!!!!

About the markings, I know for sure 222,5 is the twist rate: 1 turn in 222,5 milimeters. Or, in the Imperial sistem: 1 turn in 8,7598 inches. Or, practically, 1 turn in 8,76 inches. The original for the 7x57.
I have two Mauser 7x57. In the older one, an original DWM sporter (1893 Mauser action), there is the same mark in the barrel under the chamber.

Good luck!

PatagonHunter
