What do you think of this buffalo?
      #253000 - 31/08/14 03:01 PM

What do you think of this cape buffalo? It is currently being advertised "for sale" on the internet as a trophy buffalo hunt.

Great looking animal, the ear tags and paddock though...... shooting fish in a barrel

Tagged??? "Trophy"???

Besides, it's way too young, and the only reason he's touted as a trophy is that he has a SCI-scoring curve.

I don't know if it's pathetic, or ridiculous. Probably both...

The sad thing is not that people sell this kind of, ahem, "hunts", but that some people actually buy them.

No scars. Boss is soft. How young do you think he is? Six years?

It is an impressive animal. Hunting is a funny thing don't you think? I don't know if there are too many pursuits that can claim to have such a variety of ethics or reasons for undertaking the sport. Some live for the hunt, others for the end result and others get a kick from their place in the record books. Where as one man has narrow parameters under which he will take an animal others are not concerned with the how just the why. Anyone who takes this animal is only interested in the SCI points. The market is obviously there otherwise these animals would be not be advertised. There was a time when this type of thing would have had me all in arms. If that is what floats you boat buy the bull and take your animal. Get your points and hang the mount on the wall but don't call yourself a hunter.

Would suit our American friends, don't they have to buy tags for their game

Yep, fully agree.

Which takes me to the closely related topic: when will SCI revise its scoring system so that young bulls do not become the "award winning trophy" that they are now?

The seller says the bull is about seven years of age.

Personally I don't think any "trophy" comes with ear tags, and probably fed out of a feed trough most of its life.

Bull in its prime. Still a tuft of hair there just beyond the mid of "bosses" - wont' show when european skull mounted or after taxidermist fix. Tags aside - bull is tamed and has poor stamina - won't last long after a pride of lions set sights on him - not to mention poachers!

...IMO Cape Buffalo needs to earn its name under constant harrasement by lions and poachers - somewhere inthere the attitude forms and turns a black cow into Cape Buffalo.

This youngster has no Boss between the horns and it would be like shooting a hand fed cow because that is pretty much what it is.
I have hunted wild Cape buffalo that do not have Lion preying on them and what a difference. Now think what it would be like to hunt this guy....

Who is the outfitter/seller? What country (can we guess?)

He looks to be about 8 years old. The hide would make a great rug since it doesn't appear to have a scratch on it.

Can you imagine showing off your "Trophy" and the conversation with your friends:

"Wow he's huge. Look how high and rounded his horns are!

"Um well, yeah..."

"His horns stick up so high - they must protect his head very well. He's still got lots of hair in between."

"Yeah, about that..."

"And look at the hole in his ear! Must have been from fighting. And look, the other ear has one too! Do you think thats from fighting another buffalo or maybe from the vicious African thorns you always hear about?"

'Well no, you see, thats where the ear tags used to be..."

He's a great looking young bull, but it's not hunting to kill him.

"Outfitter" is looking for a "client" for this "hunt".

Too many " " for my simple tastes, I'm afraid...

But the picture is great. I'm gonna get it enlarged and printed, will leave it hanging by the camp fire. That will make for a great conversation piece, for sure.

Great looking young bull but not for me. Too young, ear taged so most likely use to humans so no real challange. If it floats some ones boat go for it.

There's hunters, then there are collector's with lots of money who have big trophy rooms, they exist in most countries.
Don't care how they get it, or how small the paddock is. So long as its big.

Pity really. Miss the point of the hunt!

cheers
