Versatility...

Versatility in Picture Form

We all talk about versatile hunting dogs, but this guy really has been for me. He retrieves ducks, geese, works and retrieves pheasants and forest grouse and he hauls my pulk on skitreks. I plan to teach him to blood track this year for follow-ups on wounded big game next year. My wife gave him to me as a present and I had him blessed by our Priest in an ancient Rite of the Church when he was almost 1 year old. 4 days later a man tried to kill him in the mountains but by a miracle he was stopped. We have gone many places together and he is a great companion.

Here he is;

9 weeks;

Somewhat older…

Grouse;

Geese;

Pheasants;

Ducks;

More...

Ground squirrels for coyote bait;

Working out:

Up in it;

He even plays Reindeer! {not too happily…}

When he was a little guy in-training;

Champion dog. Looks like you had some good fun camping in the snow as well.

Nice to see you, rod - was becoming concerned. Lost contact info in a computer crash.

Great pictures - as usual.

whats that? a retriever with the heart of a grizzly

you are maybe not in a real winged game area but dont you miss some kind of a pointer when on birds?
is the retriever looking for birds like such a specialist.
asking this because the retriever here in general is only a pet.

looks like flecktarn

That's a "chicken". No matter the species, ruffed, franklin, blue or sharpie, we call them "chickens". That may be a local thing - lol.

Retrievers are wonderful dogs.

Ja, Flecktarn!

We have piles of the stuff. I bought boxes of it when the kids were young as equipping kids gets expensive and such surplus stuff is cheap. Turned out it is just about the best camo for our area as well.

The bird pictured in your post is a female pheasant. I have a permit and raise them from chicks and release them on my ranch here and we have the family out for shoots. We can shoot roosters or hens.

As for the retriever, yes, he works out in front and flushes then retrieves. You have to teach them to stay in gun range of course but they are great pheasant dogs and lots of folks use them for pheasant here. As well as for Daryl's "chickens"! He does well on them, too, but a guy has to be quick on the gun in the brush for grouse.

Funny thing, my buddy was a TERRIBLE swimmer when he was a pup, up till he was about a year old. Little by little he figured it out and loves water.

Been a long time since I shot pheasant- but that one seems really light in colour Rod.

I've heard of guys around here teaching their Lab's to quarter - That is something the spaniels (mine included) seem to do automatically, roving back and forth in front of you about 25 yards out to flush the birds. Labs become very proficient at it as well and then are hard be beat on pheasant - yes- that bird is very light coloured - IIRC - long legs though.

It is.

These are young birds hatched in the spring. They are normally pretty light {hens}.

Yes, what you describe is what my buddy does wonderfully...on a good day!! LOL.

He is a load of fun. Happiest living thing I have ever seen! Always eager, always ready for a hike, a hunt or any adventure {or when encountering any other uncut male..a fight Sheesh...}.

interesting that a retriever do all the work alone. I found it allways very baroque when seeing pics where pointer and retriever working together in a team.

Don't know how a retriever and pointer would work out. The Labs and Springers are flushing dogs, and would flush any bird a pointer found - or flush (25 to 30yards in front of the hunters) they before the pointer could find a bird.

Or perhaps, the pointer, if ranging further out in front, might cause the retriever to roam too far out and flush the birds out of range of the hunters.

A pair of retiever/flushers working together is a wonderful hunt.

Now, a pair of Britany pointer/retrievers would be fun. Dogs are SO much better at finding dead birds in the brush than I am.

All the pointers I've ever shot over retrieved as well.

Should add, there is a sort of sub-group of pointing Labrador Retrievers and I have owned one that would point occasionally but I never developed the trait.

On a different note...

More or less all dogs love to pull. Doesn't seem to matter size or breed. They just love to hunker down in the traces and haul. I have just as much fun watching my guy haul the pulk as retrieve. We go all over the mountains here. I drive my pickup till the logging companies quit plowing the roads and then set out into the beyond. Nobody out there but my buddy and I. Very enjoyable.

I have had German Wirehairs most of the last 20 years of my life..have had springers and labs earlier..but at this stage could not be happier with the little gal I currently have.

She'll retrieve birds out of water, point upland like no tomorrow and track wounded game as well as any I have ever had. Plus is incredible with the family. Watches over my little boy as if she can read his mind when we are camping..

Not begrudging other breeds or other's dogs, but for where and when I hunt she works awesome..

Yes- sure is. Nice Model 37 Ithaca as well. I have one with a vent 28" bl. in the lockup - not mine as I'm holding it for the son of a friend who passed with Alzheimer's a couple years ago. If the kid straightens out to MY satisfaction and obtains both a P.A.L. AND hunting license, he gets his dad's shotgun & M60 Cooey - but not until.

Well done Rod.

That "37" is rollmarked Ithaca 87, a gun the then-reorganized Ithaca company built for a few years. Same as the 37. Then the company died again and when reorganized brought out rollmarked 37's again. I've got 2, the 12 ga shown w/ the goose {wore out one buttstock and restocked it} and a newer 37 20 gauge I use for the pheasants. Had a long modified barrel chopped short and a brass bead added. No choke and it is a real killer up close and doesn't destroy birds. Heck, even I can hit with it!

ETA: My son has two also. One a field gun he used when he shot on the U of I trap club and an old one his ex-girlfriend's uncle gave him. Best thing that ever came out of that relationship... LOL.
