S.African hunting getting expensive
      #2518 - 27/04/03 06:37 PM

Hunting in S.Africa is getting more expensive each year. For instance in 2000 a cape buffalo was available for US$9000 0r so,but this year it is quoted at US$19000,simalarly a lion was available for$14000 but today the price is $27000.Why this sudden jump of more than 100%.I really like hunting in S.A.but at this rate of inflation i doubt if many people will be able to afford it.As far as plainsgame is concerned costs are more or less static but big game is way too high.
Other states in Africa such as Tanzania,Zimbabwe etc. have not increased rates that much and are still affordable.Has anyone researched this,as i would like to be informed.

Safari-Hunt has a package for around 8500 USD for 1 Buff in the Klasserie area, there is also possible to hunt the same buff for only 55 USD but then you need to rely on luck and buy a ticket in the raffle.

It's a matter of supply and demand. RSA faces Bovine TB problems with their buffalo, plus they exterminated most of them to farm many years ago. Now, landowners must buy buffalo and other game species to restock their farms and the auctions command a high price which gets passed on to you.

Also, these are private properties which means a staff must get paid to maintain it and fences must be built. No cheap endeavor by any means.

There are some who can afford the price to pay and since they will pay it the prices will continue to go up.

Lastly, this year the rand is very high to the dollar. When this happens outfitters get nervous as the exchange isn't as good for them. They don't discount when the value is the other way though.

IMO,it has always been more expensive in RSA to hunt Buffalo, or Lion. This is compounded, today, with the Bovine Tuburculosus (spl) only "CLEAN" bulls can be bought at auction for release in any provence in RSA. These "CLEAN" bulls come at a dear price, which must be passed on the the client.

As Christer says, there are some real bargins even in RSA, SAFARI HUNT has the buff hunt, Christer mentions in the Klasere, and the price includes the trophy fee for the buffalo.

I know this was most likely and oversight, but, FYI, Tanzasia, and Zimbabwe are not states, but countries, as Africa is a continent, not a country!

Iqbal

I agree wholeheartedly about the prices.

Other than Safari-Hunt's very good price for buffalo - which I would love to take-up - I don't see the point of hunting cape buff in SAf - way too expensive - and when you can get a buff hunt starting around $6,500 in Zimbabwe or Tanzania, why bother?

As for Lion. I would want to have a look at the property first. Seen a few "Lion hunting exclosures" from the road and could almost see the near fence and the far fence from the same point. I think Lion is an animal which MUST be hunted free range as its natural territroy is so large. That's besides the point as I doubt I'd ever be able to afford Lion in SAf.

But enjoy the plains game hunting there while it also remains in relative terms affordable.

Iqbal,
Being a PH in RSA myself the biggest problem is money hungry outfitters!!!!And I am ashamed to have people like that in the industry in RSA.But I think it goes for any bussiness in the world.I'll do my best to always give the hunter a fair price on fair animals.Yes sometimes your price might be a bit higher than the outfitters next door but the inflation is redicoulous.I can offer male lions in the region of US$15 000 but that also is to high in my opinion.Unfortunatly as Aspen mentioned there is staff to pay, landowners(hunting rights),ph licences etc.
The rand/dollar fluctuation is also a concern.

My best advise to you is to try and stay with the honest gyus in the business who does it 80% for the love of the game and 20% for the money!!!!

Good luck and kind regards

I PH (mostly) in Mozambique, RSA & Tanzania plus a little in 3 or 4 other countries, so I guess I get to see more of the industry than many.

RSA is great for plains game hunting if you are happy to hunt behind wire. Prices and camp facilities are unbeatable. Other than that you really need to go elsewhere if you want to hunt dangerous game in the proper manner & at a reasonable price. (if such a term can be applied)

In RSA Buff have to be clean and are consequently expensive. Elephants are ex-park animals and consequently ignore people and vehicles etc. Leopard are so educated it's not true, and their licences (mostly) go through so many hands it's embarrasing. Lion, well you all know that story....... and so it goes on.

If you want to hunt dangerous game in the true spirit of African hunting you must go to a true wilderness such as Mozambique or Tanzania and you have to pay the price for doing so. It's as simple as that.

As there is no such thing as a free lunch you will find that the going rate for a Buff hunt in a true wilderness area starts at around US$8500 for a 2x1 hunt which will include all taxes and fees and the trophy fee on 1 Buffalo per hunter.

South African daily rates currently start at around US$180 per hunter per day plus trophy fees.

Having said that, it's one of the best experiences any hunter could possibly have and worth every penny.!!

Putting it into perspective.
An average price for a buff in SA on auction is R120 000 per animal. This excludes transportation from the place of capture to the place of release.
A very old bull, past it prime will go for a bit less. Lets make it R90 000 and forget transport fees. Last year the R/$ exchange was @ R11/$1 making that buff = $8200. At present we are sitting at R7.10 to the US$, making that same buff $12 500. A 52% inflation!
The buff at $19 000 is either a top 10 trophy animal or the owner does not have it or does not want to get rid of it. The next Number 1 Cape Eland is available at $14 000 at this point in time. They usually go for around $1 800.
Low $ to Rands does not only make outfitters nervous, but also make them go out of business. Outfitters living on 80% love and 20% money makes me nervous. Usually 80% of them run before the 20% drop in currency. I am curios to see how many bargain outfitter will hang around till 2004/5.
Tanzania’s buff packages at $8 000 odd is probably the best value for money - to a sure outfitter that is... Eastern Cape’s packages probably the best for plains game in SA.
Welcome to the African Stock Exchange.

The answer is to hunt Zimbabwe. The prices are more reasonable and the hunting is better. The only problem is getting your guns in (if you are a US citizen) and your trophies out. You figure the first, your PH should be able to solve the second if he knows the ropes. A little green goes a long way. If you don't know one that does, I do.
