Photos of British Mauser stock styles
      #251570 - 05/08/14 12:33 PM

I think it would be great to have a photo essay of the various British makers Mauser stock styles. I often hear the term "Holland" or "Jeffery" style. Sometimes it is hard for me to know exactly what those terms mean. I believe that certain characteristics must define an individual makers stock style. It would be wonderful to have pictures of various original British Mausers posted in the same thread for comparison. It would give all of us an idea of how they differ from one another. Thanks in advance for anyone who can contribute.

To really show this, we would need good profile pictures much like in Speed's Mauser books.
You have to look at and handle a lot of British Mausers to get to know particular features or style of the different firms. For me, it is mostly the metalwork that sets them apart but there are little things in stocking which are particular to each maker too.
One obvious example which comes to mind is the pre war Rigby style of forend with no horn tip, whereas Jeffery and Westley Richards almost always used a horn tip.
Also, remember that many "English" Mausers are just branded Mauser TypeA's.

I realize that one would have to handle and study quite a lot of British Mausers to spot the differances. A comprehensive study like that could take someone a lifetime indeed. That is why I was hoping that members could post pictures of original examples witin the same thread for us all to compare. I'm sure it may take a while to have enough pictures to compare. If I had an original example I would have contributed myself. Unfortunatly I own no such gems, so I have come here to ask for this forums help. No other place I have found on the web has such enthusiasum for vintage British style !

Here's a couple of photos of my much abused Westley Richards 1909 Mauser, originally in 8X57J, now in 9X57, before getting the Lon Paul treatment. It is currently in Lon's shop and should be ready by fall hunting season.

Xausa, thank you very much for getting things started. Your picture gives us an excellent profile view of the stock. The picture of the barrel with makers name provides authenticity as well. Nice rifle !

Here are a couple of rifles that I built based on a pattern taken from a WR rifle I bought from Xausa in 1979.

Ozhunter, thank you very much for submitting pictures of your great looking 425 Westley Richards. That is a Perfect profile picture of the stock. What a nice cheek piece that stock has.

Carpetsahib, does your Westley also have a cheek piece ?

At this point, both examples of original Westley Richards stocks are quite similar. They have nice long grips, almost identical checkering pattern, a realativly low not too steep comb nose, and a forearm with more moderate not too extreme taper.

Ozhunter, I congratulate you for taking a fine vintage British rifle afield, and taking down a worthy trophy. Well done sir !

The WR does not have a cheek piece; neither did the original. Barrel length is 22.5"; weight is 7.6 lbs. with sling; caliber is 8x57 (this is a Mauser Werk BYF action and military barrel). It is equipped with a Lyman 57 receiver sight and diamond front sight. Appended are additional photos.

Just for comparison here is the Type A Oberndorf stock, red Pachmayr pad just fitted. Has been reinforced with three pins identical to ozhunter's very nice 425 WR.

Eagle27, the profile of the Type A Oberndorf stock is great for comparison. It does appear to me that both examples of Westley Richards stocks have a bit longer grip area than the type A Mauser. Checkering is very close. The forearms appear similar. I assume the forearm mounted swivel stud on you Oberndorf is not original. The Type A does have a very British look. Its possible the type A is where British styling originated. Someone smarter than me will have to say which came first, the Chicken or the Egg.....

Please don't be modest. Anyone with Original British Mausers, show off your pride and joy! Profile pictures of the stock would be the most helpful.

Well spotted, yes the forearm swivel stud is not original, I installed it for using a bipod at the range, I would remove it when using the rifle on game as it is up against my forehand. Perhaps need to install a recessed socket for a QD stud. Not traditional but then neither is the scope mounted that way, just effective.

As I understand it the Type A Mausers were designed with the British market in mind and had quite a long length of pull for off hand shooting by the tall Englisher.

Here's the same rifle shown above as a work in progress in Lon Paul's shop. It lacks only bluing the barrel to be complete.

xausa, that is an great profile picture of your Westley Richards restoration in progress. Looks like Lon Paul has done an excellent job. Please post pictures when the work is completed. I am curious, what type of buttplate does your Westley have ?

My reaction exactly. That coupled with the original caliber of 8X57JS makes me think that it was sold during the time when W-R were simply using standard Mauser barreled actions and stocking them in their own distinctive style as well as adding their own typical sights. The low serial number would seem to bear this out, placing it in the 1912 range, while Rigby were still the sole agent for Mauser rifles in Great Britain, and shortly after W-R introduced the .318 in 1910.

KWJohnston: As best I can remember, the buttplate is plain steel.

Incidentally, before being rebored, the caliber was stamped on the side "7.9 mm". I simply had the "7." removed from the marking, leaving an authentic looking 9 mm in its place.

Yes he did but with a quartering shot with a big soft nose at 2350fps he did not go far.

Here is four British rifles with quite similar stock style and lines.

From above Lincoln Jefferies post-war M98 in .375, BSA Lee Speed, British M-S of unknown make and a Rigby .275:

Good looking rifles all four. I naturally like the Rigby best with the BSA a close second. Great condition too. All very nice.
