Mannlicher - Schoenauer at it's worst: Aboninable buttstock, Weatherby aping white line spacers and a near useless cartridge.

Why so ? I think .244 (a.k.a 6mm) Remington is very nice caliber when making, for example, m98 Mauser actioned rifle for shooting big birds (Lyrurus tetrix and Tetrao urogallus) from long range. That kind of hunting is very popular in Scandinavia. Barrel twist for light bullets is very good for this purpose.

Actually, I have one full stocked small ring Mauser project waiting, so.....

Lyrurus tetrix and Tetrao urogallus: Birkhahn, Auerhahn
unfortunately practically extinct in central Europe, I do not know where it is still legal to hunt them.
Traditionally in Germany and Austria they where hunted in spring during rutting season, with shotgun or a rather slow bullet, never on long range.
6 mm Rem seems good for exploding the bird, not so good for eating it or displaying the trophy...

Probs means for the flat trajectory to head shot.

Tetrao urogallus are absolutely beautiful looking! I'd never heard of either until this post!

The nice thing about a .244 is that it can easily be converted to 6.5X57 or 7X57 by reboring. The stock is an easy fix, too. Only the bolt handle presents some difficulty, but one can get used to it, if one tries hard enough. I have one in 9.3X62, and I only take it out at dawn or dusk, so I don't frighten the wildlife.

It debents on which kind of load you make and which bullet to use. In skandinavia for example 6mmBR is quite popular for long range bird hunting. Those ranges could be 150-200 meter when shooting Lyrurus tetrix in autumn when they begin to live in bigger herds. In Sweden you could hunt Tetrao urogallus shortly even in winter time. In that shooting distances could easily be more than 200 meters. Below is link to Youtube film:

Igorrock - Interesting birds - huge - I couldn't help but think of the angle of those shots from the safety aspect. When shooting a high powered rifle, I was taught, teach and will only shoot when there is a backstop for the bullet. Different strokes in different areas, I guess.

Yes the Monte Carlo stock is a bit much. The forend is nicely shaped however.

As for the .244 or better known as the 6mm Remington it is an excellent round, better than the .243 Winchester. I would think it is ideal for roe deer in Europe. It is capable on fallow, whitetail, chital, with a 100 gr controlled expansion bullet, a perfect size for hog deer, perfect for roos with a 70 or 75 gr HP, and all sorts of medium sized game. Great on feral pigs and goats.
