Surprised others have not replied to this.

I am rather taken with the 8X68s and think it would be hard to beat as a plains game cartridge. If I were to something else it would be my 35Sambar. hard to go past those two I would think.

I've used a .30-06, 8x68S, 9.3x74R and a .375 H&H Mag.

Mostly with the .30-06 and a borrowed 8x68S.

Mixed success with the .30-06, which really was more bullet failure than the cartridge. Using a different heavier bullet, I happened to have two loads with, which shot to the same point of impact, the heavier different 200 gr bullet worked far far better.

Decided a 8x68S would be my main "plains game" rifle. Borrowed Karl Stumpfe's Mauser 98 in 8x68S in Namibia to try it out. Since also bought one in Mauser M03 but never taken it to Africa yet.

I think a 200 or 220 gr well constructed bullet in it would be ideal.

Why not a 7x57 or something similar?

I think this is one of the answers (from the article):
Quote:

One of the realities of African hunting is that on occasion, you have to provide Major Thump. You can, if you wish, shoot a roan with a 7x57, but consider that a roan is 500-pounds plus, exceedingly tough, and the license fee for one is probably pushing $10,000 by now. If all does not go according to plan and you wound an animal and lose it, you still get to pay the ten grand. I, myself, would forswear the 7x57 for the .338.

Really with the cost of safaris and trophy fees nowadays, one really wants to drop them, be able to take shots which might be "less than perfect", so sometimes more is required.

I took my eland with a .30-06, and 200 gr Nosler Semi-pointed Partition. One other PH in camp said it was too light and couldn't be done. So my PH wanted to prove the twit wrong. It was a one plus one kill shot ie one shot kill with another just in case. But once the heart has been destroyed its going to die anyway.

Interesting that the .338 was named in the article. The good old .318 Westley Richards and the 8x60 were considered some of the best. Not much different.

9.3 X 62 with 286 grain projectiles in a CRF bolt action rifle with a low power scope is an ideal plains game.

However, the .375 H&H is superior as a full fledge African safari rifle with its ability to take all game with its wide bullet range (225 - 350).

My experience and opinion goes two ways when it comes to a plains game rifle..First, I will NEVER hunt in a dangerous game area ever again for plains game with anything less than a .375H&H..case being, you are sneaking into a hide during zero dark thirty, suddenly a tuskless cow with calf come boiling out of the brush as you got too close but didn't see her until it was too late..you are going to look really silly (if you still can when its over) with a 270 in your hand shooting 130gr softs...this happened to me..won't happen again..

Secondly, I agree with the heavier grain bullets for plains game as stated, you NEVER know what is going to come boiling out of the brush..hence, my statement above..My last trip I used my 300RUM using 200Gr A-Frames..shot a zebra, eland, hippo, croc, leopard, baboon, numerous impala, waterbuck and hyena. All one shot kills with that combo including the eland and zebra.

Most shots are relatively closed compared to western US hunting..as such, trajectory is not as much of a factor, so heavier weight for caliber bullets are my suggestion. Also, as stated, game can range from 50lbs to 1800.. Heavier bullet and a tougher bullet as well, as it is less likely to blow up the little stuff as much and still get the penetration needed on the large species, IMHO.

No experience in Africa - some here in the Western Canada. I like my 9.3's and the .375 - that is what I am comfortable shooting - accurately, and that is what I would use - effectively, I'm sure. Traipsing about in grizzly bush, they make be feel quite comfortable, not so much the lesser calibres. From those experiences here and from others in Africa in similar situations, the mediums get the nod from me.

There is not much difference I can see between the two, except the 9.3x62 Oberndorf, with it's 22" bl. would be handier in REALLY tight bush. Perhaps 260 Nosler Partition or 286 Partitions- or a TSX is it liked them. H4895 for decent ballistics, not the factory crap.

Otherwise, I'd prefer the .375's 25" bl. with 270gr. TSX at 2,650fps. I kind of think that bullet, or the 250gr. TSX might be the cat's meow- all around.

I think that if I was after springbok, gemsbok, hartmann zebra, etc., in the arid open plains or mountains of Namibia, I'd probably take a .300 with 200+gr bullets.

Otherwise a 9.3x62 with 250gr northfork, accubond or barnes;

or a scoped double .375 H&H (belted) regulated with something common

This guy's experience mirrors my gut feeling. If I'm hunting deer in bear country I will definitely be loaded for bear, even if it means losing a couple pounds of meat or some more hide to bullet damage. Hunting antelope in lion country, same thing. You see, I have this aversion to becoming dinner while looking for my dinner. That, and I want to shoot a lion anyway. The way I see it, hunting what lions like to eat carries a decent chance of stumbling on a lion.

I have shot a 270 Winchester enough to be on its 3rd barrel. I KNOW what they are capable of doing and I LOVE the cartridge.

However when I hunt elk or moose where there are a lot of grizzlies, I carry my 375. I have run into them a several occasions.

So I have to agree with Ripp and Schakleton. The odds are that the 270 would do 99.99% of all jobs you would ever call on it to do. And honestly, it would probably be OK on most shots against a bear if you have the correct bullet and keep your cool
BUT---------------
If you luck runs like mine has a time of two, that 1/10th of a percent chance listed above will usually come up in the 1st 10% of your hunts
My 375 kills elk just fine too and I just like how it makes me feel when I am running into predators that can kill and eat about anything they choose to. Some of the bears around here make most African loins look small. I don’t carry a 375 to be a “big man”.

I carry it because I am a MUCH smaller creature than a large grizzly bear.

Personally I'd use my everyday work horse the 300WM with 180 gr A Frame @ 2920 fps.
Should I risk dangerous game encounters, I'd opt for the 375HH also with 300 gr A Frame @ 2550 fps. Of course if eles in the area , 375HH with GPA solid @ 2170 fps.

I accounted for about 90 head of plains game with my pre-64 Model 70 Winchester in .300 H&H. Of course, I never hunted plains game out of a hide I had to get into in the dark. In fact, the only hide I ever used was the one I took my leopard out of, and in that situation, I was using my Krieghoff double rifle in .375 H&H.

Factory loaded ammunition with 180 grain Silvertips did the job admirably, with everything from oryx and sable to dik-dik, although I would have used a .222 on the latter, had I had one handy.

Here I am, demonstrating an impala's horn spread by comparing it to the length of my 26" barrel:

JB, why do you shoot the solid so much slower than the A-frame? 400 fps slower? Do you get a similar point of impact for the two bullets?

My .375 shoots the 300 gr Woodleigh RNSP and FMJ at about 2350 fps for both of them. The barrel is a bit shorter than the usual .375 barrel as well.

I would not feel under gunned for DG with the 8X68S, or any of my 35 cal rifles- I have 35Whelen, 35Sambar (225grain Hydro at 2800fps). All would have a Woodleigh Hydro in the chamber if DG were in the area. Sure they are not legal calibres for Ele and Buff but they will still penetrated far more than any soft point-and I would have more than a mags worth of them on the belt not to mention a few 300grain Woodleigh SN for the 35's. Yes, I would be happier with the 375 H&H. My problem would be remaining calm enough to place the rounds where they need to go.

Hi John
The solids are off the shelf by the French Sologne maker. I opted for those available. As I hardly have any use of solids, I picked the first cartridges immediately available instead of reloading for a rarely used ammo. Prior I was using PMP ammos but they don't exist any longer. But I appreciate the Woodleigh RNSP and FMJ for my 470 Chapuis.

Following this thread, it downs on me that in France we aren't offered a wide choice of calibers. Lazziness or lack of curiosity?

I like your choices of bullets and calibers..mine are very similar..my last trip to African I switched from 180 to 200 gr A-Frames..like them even more..as you know most shots are relatively close..and the 200 gr is great on both energy and penetration..I was shooting them out of a 300RUM

I use the same load for the 375..but will load up some 270gr before heading after Eland for next year..

I take my 375 H&H for everything. Normally I shoot the 300grain TSX at 2500 fps and that works for just about any plains game. Next month I'm taking it for Nyala so for long range I'm loading the 235 grain CEB Raptor ER at 3100 fps.

If there was a "Best" of anything, we'd know about it... And I wouldn't have married three times.

For African hunting, as many here have pointed out, one prime consideration is that you may encounter anything at anytime, and a big angry anything running at you dictates what you ought to have in your hands.

So, yes, a Plains Game rifle should be on the heavy side, caliber wise. Any of the various 8x68, .338, 9.3, .375 will insure that you can do reasonably well on longish shots, and save your bacon if faced with the unexpected - provided you have the right bullet up the spout. No real point in trying to quell the animosity of four tons of pachyderm with a Silvertip...

The Woodleigh Hydro is in a niche by itself in these circumstances. It will allow you a decent wound channel on plains game if you are presented with a shot and no time to switch rounds, and will drill through feet of bones (ok, maybe not...) if needed in a tight spot.

In the end, it all depends on the area in which you find yourself, and the critters roaming by.
