Do I need a 30.06
      #249466 - 25/06/14 02:42 PM

I should start by saying I have one however I am thinking of thinning out the arsenal as I just don't use all of the guns.
So I have a 7x57 and will soon have a 318. Without checking all the books I am pretty sure that the biggest projectile I can get in the 7x57 is about the size of the smallest one I can get in the 318.
So if you take my point here do I really need a 30.06 as well?
Am I missing anything?
Rick

The 7x57 is a wonderful round, so if you want just two rifles left and want to break them up a bit then keep it and the .318. But the 30.06 is also fabulously versatile too. Oh not a good choice at all, I hate selling any of mine I would end up keeping it haha I am a terrible hoarder!!!!

The only reason I can see is that you can always get ammo for a 30-06. The lovely 7x57 is not common but usually you can hunt some ammo down. The 318 .... It may be best to buy 2 or 3 cases and enough loading components now for the rest of your life. Maybe that's the solution, sell the 30-06 and buy ammo/components for the other two.

Great pair by the way.

If there is a more boring round then the 30-06 it must be the 308.

AGREE...
I fall in the same boat..have a hard time getting rid of any..even though I should..have some I havnt shot in over a decade or more..

As to the '06...I say get one..there really isn't anything you couldn't hunt with that round..it has proved itself for over 100 years..and yes, ammo is readily available pretty much anywhere you go..

I'd keep the 7x57 & .318 with loads of loading components, and then buy a 9.3x62 or .375 Ruger/.375H&H with the proceeds of the .30/06 sale.

Bravo, now that is a good idea too, I love my 9.3x62and my 9.5x57 as well as my 7x57, 8x57. But is also think my 338.06,
338.08 (Federal) and .458WM are excellent too, hmmm there are more to but I am going off topic and dreaming again
My original comment stands, if you just want to cut down the number you have keep the 7x57 and the .318. They will do anything you ask of them with the loading components available now days

I'm guessing .375brno may already have a .375 .

I'd keep it. But I am also a hoarder.

All three are great CLASSIC VINTAGE cartridges. The .30-06 may not seem like it because it is so popular, but there is a reason it is popular, because it is a good cartridge.

I would keep it as ammo and components are easy to get.

Otherwise as suggested, stock up big time with components for the .275 and especially the .318.

Australia does not yet have any real limitations in gun numbers you can own. In the meantime, a good reason to keep them. IMO.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Nitrox is the most observant as I do have a 375H&H already. Maybe more than one !!

I think it is going to depend on if I start using it again. The fact that I can use those 30.06 cases to make 318 cases is also a consideration. And also it is not as if the gun is worth a fortune anyway.

Decisions, decisions.

One always needs a .30-06! It is a fantastic cartridge, only drawback is that it was invented by a committee in the US. Had it been spawned by Messrs Rigby, Holland or Richards it would probably be regarded as the best sporting rifle cartridge of all time.

Kudu, wildebeest (both types), gemsbuck, impala, warthog, blesbuck, springbuck, and what not. You really cannot make a mistake.

Have a .318, .375, .243, 6,5x55 and a bunch of other stuff as well, BTW!

What you need, by the sound of it, is to reorganise your life so you have time to use all of the rifles in your collection.

After all, nobody has confessed on their deathbed to wishing they'd spent more time at work....

A lot of wisdom right there.

But the 7x57 does 99% of what an 30-06 does and it's just classier.

Don't make love to an ugly woman, it just keeps spreading the ugly genes.

Death to the 30-06, 308, 300 win, 243, and 458!

So maybe that's why I don't own one. but have a 6.5 x 54, 7 x 57R Martini and a .300 Savage in a 99. Oh, and lots of reloading stuff too.

There is no reason not to own a 30'06 that I can think of.
Sure, there are cartridges out there which can "almost" do what the '06 can but why compromise.
That's like saying, "a Fiat does 90% of what a Ferrari does, so I own three old Fiats and two rusty Alfas instead of a Ferrari"

Besides, the selection of bullets for the '06 is huge so it can fill a very wide gap between your 7X57 and the .375.

Just read an article recently stating it would certainly be on the top 10 of all time best cartridges ever designed..

Think it can not be beat for all around use in most cases..with the exception of being in a dangerous game area in Africa ..while its a great round..getting charged by a buff or tuskless, I'd opt for the .375 or larger in my hands..

Agree--I'll take the Ferrari...

Ripp

BTW--more interesting info/opinions by others on the '06...for what its worth..
