Take down single shot?
      #249117 - 16/06/14 11:47 PM

I just got back from Natal RSA and I am doing what I believe all true rifle loonies do rig after a great trip, they build the rifle that would have been perfect for that trip!

I brought my Chapuis SxS 9.3x74r and took a couple of bushbucks with it. I also brought a Weatherby Ultralight in 338-06 and this was not so great. Not flat shooting enough, trigger was a touch heavy and it was a compromise for my father so he could bring his 6.5x284 but use the 338-06 to hunt Eland.

We basically hunted bushbucks for 11 days straight, we looked over at least 25 decent rams and took a handful. The hunting was in two very different styles. The first was stalking through river systems and snap shooting with the 9.3x74r. The rifle was perfect for this and I loved the red dot on the Leupold VX6 1-6x scope.

The second was sort of a cross between sheep hunting and varmint hunting. Sneaking just below ridge lines and glassing for rams on the opposite slope. My PH Ryan Pinaar guides for sheep in BC so this kind of makes sense. I used the 338-06 for this and it was OK at best.

What would have been perfect would have been a flat shooting single shot rifle in something like 26 Nosler, 257 Weatherby or 270 Win Short mag.

I'd like a single shot with a 25-26 inch barrel to keep length and weight in check. I'd like a takedown to travel in a small case with my double. Airports suck! This is what I'm thinking so far.

-Blaser k95 in 257 Weatherby
-Custom Ruger #1 in 26 Nosler (takedown, removable rear stock)
-Does the Dakota m10 come in a takedown?
-Custom Thompson Encore in 26 Nosler
-What models am I missing?

Thoughts or suggestions?

Sounds like a great trip, that's a lot of Bush Buck, can you show us some pics of them & what sort of length were you getting ?

I have a Weatherby Ultralight in 338/06 & 270Win (don't use the 270) great handling rifles !
What projectiles & weight were you using, as you had one of the best cartridges for the job you were doing for sure ?

160gr to 300gr (Ok 160's are no good in our Ultralights with all that freebore) I use 185gr TSX & get over 3000fps, even more with the 180gr BT now discontinued, so over 300Win Mag velocity, mild recoil & very flat shooting, all at 6lbs !

I just got some CEB 175gr but mainly to use as solids & expanding, not working so well so far as they need to be seated to far in the cases, but I have a plan to seat them below the bands by take the expander ball out !

Any way they have a 176gr Raptor, now that would be real good (if it shoots).

I really like Single Shots, but for this type of international hunting I would choose a Take Down bolt rilfe, I hate to say it maybe even a Blaser 93 ?

I too would be interested in hearing what takedown single shots are available. I need to have a look at some models and see what they are.

I do like these Verney-Carron singles. Shared this photo to the NE fb page a day or two ago from the Chambord Game Fair in France where V-C attended.

Not sure if they are takedowns but having a look. L'Atelier is a custom range so perhaps could be made as a takedown anyway (?). I am asking Jean V-C currently to see what he says.

Found this pic as well.

"Falling Block rifles can now be part of your Bespoke request from L'Atelier Verney-Carron.
FYI : The rifle on this picture is just an example, we make BESPOKE guns at L'Atelier Verney-Carron (www.l.atelier.verney-carron.fr)"

Ralf Martini and Martin Hagn both make single shot and bolt action take down rifles and do extra sets of barrels

Beautiful rifle, hard to beat. Of course all break action rifles (Kipplaufbuchse) are take down automatically.

Take down single shot. I have had one since I was nine years old. H&R handi rifle. Ugly but accurate and cheap has hell. Mine is a 30-30/20g switch barrel but they come in all sorts of calibers.

Get one engraved and put some fancy wood on it and Bob is your uncle.

Verney-Carron SA:

John, as you know, L'Atelier Verney-Carron (www.l.atelier.verney-carron.fr) build Bespoke guns according to the wishes and morphology of the customer.
Therefore, and even though we do have some constraints due to the mechanisms we start from, L'Atelier Verney-Carron's Master-gunsmith, Mr. Jérôme Lanoue, always try new things and he is currently making a takedown falling block rifle.
So the answer is YES and the contact info is there => www.l.atelier.verney-carron.fr/pages-us/contact.htm
