A good result for a bunch of Victoria fox shooters over a weekend. 71 foxes and one feral cat.

Some might wonder why so many foxes were shot. Foxes are a fine game animal, but they are also a pest in Australia being introduced and a blight on native ground nesting birds and small marsupials. Many species have been driven to extinction by foxes and feral cats. Plus heavy predation on lambs and other stock.
The foxes in the photo would have been shot on a drive with hunters carrying shotguns walking in a line and with blockers in front of the intended walk destination. Shot with 12 gauge shotguns. 71 is a pretty good number and well done to the guys. There must be more guys than those in the photo.
We do the same in my area and on the last drive I attended we shot about 27 foxes. On a small block I regularly shoot on, six foxes were shot, yet I would rarely shoot a single one on it. Shows how effective these drives can be.
In my area the drives are done in February and March to kill as many foxes before lambing season and while more foxes are young and stupid. Unfortunately the skins are summer skins then only.

Thats good, always shoot a fox when you see one. Are there a market for the winter skins in Australia? Unfortunately not much of a market these days for skins in Sweden.

Australian shooters using a spotlight at night used to be able to make considerable incomes from fox pelts. I knew one guy who lived in Tasmania and travelled to sheep stations in Western Australia to live for six months of each year to hunt, shoot and trap foxes. He made his yearly income that way.
Then in the 1980's the anti-fur morons destroyed the fur wear consumer market and fox skins became uneconomical. A good fox pelt in the good days could earn from $30 to more than $50 each pelt. That dropped to probably a maximum of $15 each pelt after consumer demand crashed.
As a result fox numbers exploded and native wildlife suffered. The greenies and antis again showed their ignorance and their policies destroyed native wildlife species.

I believe Victoria introduced a bounty ($10?) for each fox "scalp" a couple of years ago. Some 170,000 foxes were taken under it at one report.
