Best way to display a knife collection?

I have a few dozen knives, short swords, swords, axes, spears, clubs and the like in a collection.

Some well used, some somewhat used, some never used, just part of the collection.

What's the best way to display them?

What do you do with yours? Or have seen elsewhere?

I am disinclined to drill lots of holes in a brick wall, as when the collection changes, the display may change. Looking for ideas. I have some ideas, but perhaps some have ideas not considered. Thanks.

For myself, I am thinking of a nice Walnut glass cabinet along with other interesting things.

A glass topped table with a lid that hinges..IE a bit like a pool table with a timber bordered toughened glass lid, with a bedding of nice colour of felt or fur/hide for them to lay on.

Hi Staffan and JG. Some good ideas.

I was thinking of some sort of wall hanging method. Perhaps using some felt on a board, the board attached to the wall and the knives and other assorted stuff hung from the board. If it all changes, just remove the board, re-felt and start again. Methods of hanging? Perhaps small nails or tacks, perhaps with thin wire?

I do like both the idea of a glass cabinet and a glass topped table/coffee table. Good as it might stop small hands from getting to them if lockable. Also dust etc. Also better in keeping humidity down, using some moisture capture type blocks or beads.

One idea would be to combine the two ideas, and use a cabinet with a "shelf" section. I have one of those old cabinets with an "accountants" sloped desk on it. Something custom made like that would work really well. Glass doors on the upper part of the cabinet with shelves and hanging space. A sloping glass topped lid to the storage space under the sloped glass to hang other display items. Instead of four legs under the desk like the antique original, instead perhaps a chest of drawers.

Two problems:
1. Will cost a bit putting the project back considerably in timing.
2. Where to put it, find space, in my already over crowded house???

One of the most practical if incredibly ugly methods I have seen I will post a photo of and perhaps some extra photos on another thread - in the travel section.

I have photos somewhere, lost in boxes and boxes of old transparencies, but found a photo on the net. My wife and I stayed in Martindale Hall one weekend and had the run of the place at night. During the day it is open to the public, but if one stays there, when the public tours are over, one has the run of the place, can use the library, play billiards, can organise a gourmet cooked dinner. Accommodation was and maybe still is, is in the old servants bedrooms in a private wing of the house.

Anyway Martindale has a firearm, sword and the like collection. These are displayed on the walls using chicken wire or netting. VERY practical but not photogenic!

I think these wall cabinets with glass that are thin and not build so much out from the wall are nice. Especially old ones. It´s possible also to change doors if you find the right cabinett without glass doors. I also wants a display, maybe I could take some old nice windows and use as doors???

A stone house is always a stonehouse, looks good, but the display of the rifles sucks!

A good way to display fixed blade knives is to fasten some powerful magnetic strips to a plywood back and cover the lot with felt. The magnetic strips being raised a bit so the knife hilts will clear the backing and the blade can adhere magnetically to the strip.
If you desire a glass front, just build up the sides and use a picture frame hinged to the box as a door.
Makes a very nice wall display case and the knives are very easy to arrange and get out of the case for use.
