Facts about the hunt

PH Jasper

The hunt will be done together with Proffesional Hunter Jasper Coetzee, Messina whom I hunted with last year, see story with photos and video.

On April 30:th we will have one hunting day in Free State and we will search for a Springbuck and eventually a Black Wildebeest.

On May 1:th I will hunt with NitroExpress member Safari-Hunt and become his first client ever as a PH. We will hunt the area around Ellisras and be looking for Warthogs and Impalas.

On May 2:nd we will continue the Hunt with Jasper in his home area Messina. There we will be after a nice Blue Wildebeest and a Zebra among other smaller antelopes. As I will become an agent for their company we will also take a lot of photos and video during our stay.

Tomorrow: Gun and ammo

Gun & ammo

Here is the gun I will bring next week for my hunt. A Winchester model 70 Safari, Pre 64 in caliber .375 H&H. I will load it with 250 grains Barnes X that is moving with 2755 fps or 840 meters/second. The scope is a Zeiss 2,5-10x50 that I have moved from my 300 Win mag.

Good stuff Christer

So you are taking your .375 Winchester Pre-64.

Now that is a rifle made for an African safari.

Now that rifle looks puny when held by you. Mate, next time you go you need to take at least a .577 NE double for the elephant, buffalo and lion.

John

I am quit happy with the shooting up to 150 meters and up to 250 it's ok so I will try to stay at maximum 200 meters this time.

After seeing the photo I also felt that the gun looked like a small toy. So I ordered a new gun in 50 BMG for the next trip.

As I plan to shoot a Steenbuck I could need some hints about trophy photos so it does not look to small.

Christer,

250 grain BarnesX at around 2700 fps and a steenbuck doesn't mix very well I hope you are not planning a full mount as there is some nice steenbuck trophy where we are going. BUt lets see what happens maybe you should shoot it 1/2" over it's head so it can drop dead from the bullets shock wave

The animals

There is a lot of different animals that possible can enter my shooting list this hunt. To start with I will hunt the Free State one day and hopefully find a Springbook, I will also take a lot of photos from the camp and the surroundings.

The next hunting day (if the party stops early enough) will be together with Safari-Hunt, we will mainly go for Warthogs and Impalas and I am told that there are a bachelor heard with not less then 28 rams in it. If the chance comes a duiker or a steenbook would be nice to hunt.

After two short hunts we will be around Messina in the north a couple of days and here we will aim for some bigger things. A Blue Wildeebeast and a Zebra along with a Hartebeast could be possible. Some sources has told me that there is a couple of good Eland bulls and with some close encounter I may not be able to wait until the summer for that.

Tomorrow: What to wear

What to wear

For this hunt I designed my own logo and attatched it to a couple of Cabela Serengeti shirts. I also did some hats. My 375 H&H is wearing the Safari Ching sling.

Competition - Win a hat......

If anyone needs a hat as in the photo or only like to gamble, you are welcome to enter this simple competition; Guess what the longest horn on the best impala we shoot this hunt will be and the one thats closest gets a free hat. Only one entry each and make it in inches.

Christer

Is that a tent you printed your logo on, or a T-shirt?

OK I'm going to enter this contest:

The longest impala horn taken during your hunt will be:

23 5/8's inches.

And it will be the left horn - just for fun .

How does some good Rump steak and a whole chicken on the braai sound for Dinner ? Had a good chat with Jasper yesterday and he seems to be very busy as well and fixing up your camp in Messina.

Well have a good flight and see you under the African sky. I will be back online around Saturday or so see ya all and I will come back with some interesting stories about Christer.

Tried 3 different bullets today as a last preparation for tomorrow and was quite happy with the result. Distance is 80 m/90 yards.

Good luck in this beautifull country of ours CC.Hope you get all the trophies you want. And good luck to Safarihunt as well.
Agood pic for the smaller antelope is if you sit flat on your ass with your legs folded in and drape the small thing over your lap with the one hand holding the head so the trophy show nice. You can also let the animal lie over an anthill or a rock and sit directly behind it but about 2meters away so you give a little depth to the picture. The buck looks the right size but you look a bit smaller.Gives good illusion.

Good luck again my friend and I cant wait for a report back from you

Good hunting

DAY 1

Departured Gothenburg with no more problem than that I was not allowed to have the bolt in the rifle case. Transfer in Amsterdam went smooth and as a surprise the plane was only filled to 20% about so we could have as many seats as we wanted.

Arriving in Joburg we got notified that the gun was not with and would arrive in the morning with the next flight. We met Jasper outside customs and decided to go to Free State for the one day hunt and borrow a gun, then we would pick up mine on the way to Frederik.

At 1.30 AM we arrived at camp and got installed. At 7 AM we will be out for Springbucks and Blesbocks.

Boy, no rest for the wicked here but I just realized Sweden and South Africa are probably in the same time zone.

Beats the jet lag, that's for sure.

Adventures by cchunter in South Africa - 2nd Day [Re: NitroX]
      #2570 - 01/05/03 12:22 AM

Second day

Hunted Free State with a borrowed 300 win mag and took a nice Springbock on 13 inches and a Blesbock of 16,5 inches. We also had time to pet with the lion cubs. Now we are heading to Safari-Hunt in Ellisras.

Day 3

Yesterday we ended with a nice AR meeting outside Ellisras together with Safari-Hunt (Frederik) and his brother Vincent. We had some good beer and a fantastic braai, while some local singers entertained at the lapa just by the Mogol river.

This morning’s hunt has not given any result more than some stalks for Impala rams in very thick bush. We just ended the brunch and will be out again in a while.

The Photo shows from the left three AR members from the left Owe, Safari-Hunt and me (cchunter)

Christer,

The day you can go buffalo hunting I think you should do it as a spear or knife hunt. You are quite big enough to scare the tar out of an elephant.

Be good to Frederik. I hope to meet him too in August.

And the knife hunt should be a pocket knife - just to make it fair for the animal.

I'm glad the days of a-roving Vikings are finished .

Day 4

Today my first client and very good friend Owe had his first mammal. A ver y nice Impala Ram with extremly thick bases and a very good seat. The size we will keep for a while because of the competition.

We stalked for about 1000 meters and got the opernunity with the Ram standing broadside at about 120 meter. Owe took one shoot that hit the heart and the Impala ran 50 meters after the shot. Calibre used was 375 H&H and the gun was a CZ 550.

Don't worry Ann.

Just as big as the man is so big is his heart I wonder why poeple were scared of vikings if they were so freindly even his freind "Owe" was just too friendly to be vikings. But we had a bloody good time.

Christer you forgot to post the result of the afternoon post !

Well Ann hope to see you in August then will you be here long enough maybe to do a small hunt with me ?
