500 Jeff CZ?
      #247358 - 12/05/14 10:13 AM

First I'd like to introduce myself. I'm an early 40's guy with an itch for shooting larger rifles (at least compared to my deer hunting buddies). I have a rapidly growing library of books on Africa and rifles, although I have not yet made it over there. Until then I enjoy shooting the old classic calibers. My experience thus far has been with my 375 H&H, 450/400, and a couple of 416 Rigbys. I have been wanting to add a CZ in 505 Gibbs or 500 Jeff to the collection and have a chance to pick up a CZ 550 in 500 Jeff at a price I can afford to pay right now, and still have some money left over to feed it and have fun. My question is to those who have experience with this rifle, how difficult are they to feed? Will they feed the Kynoch or Norma factory loads? I've read some reports online of them being picky about what they'll chamber and would like to know if that is the case or not. Is brass supply a problem? So far everywhere I've looked seems to be out of brass. Is that normal or just bad timing? I do plan to reload for it as I do with the others and have been looking at the dies and other necessary supplies. The price is right for me, but I just don't want to end up with a nice rifle that I can't feed. Any advice or opinions is greatly appreciated.

I have a CZ in 500 Jeffery. I love it, but it took a trip back to the CZ Custom Shop, one to AHR and finally to my local, but excellent gunsmith Kevin Weaver to make it feed and function 100% of the time. It got better each trip, machining the magazine follower to handle the fat 500 Jeffery cartridge was the final thing that completed my little journey. It shoots well under MOA when I do my part and functions flawlessly now. Expect to have to do some work to get it to feed and extract 100% of the time. Also I believe there are two slightly different specifications the Schuler and the Jeffery. I believe (but am not sure) that the Kynoch ammo is spec'd to the Schuler and would not chamber in my rifle. At $20 a round for factory ammunition it's too rich for me, I handload using Jamison brass and have loaded Woodleighs, Barnes and A-Frames and had no issues. I never tried the Norma Ammo. My pet load is the 570g TSX at 2300 fps. Anyway here's my CZ in 500 Jeffery.

Rifle: CZ Upgrade #1 by AHR

570g TSX at 2300 fps 3 shot group at 50 yards (not 100!)

450 lb feral hog taken at 8' in a thicket with my son (he got a bigger one) haven't been to Africa yet with it, soon I hope. I did get a cow elk at 200 yards with it too

Thanks for the feedback. I went yesterday and handled the rifle and will be picking it up this weekend. What dies and reloading press are you using? I may go ahead and order some ammo from Superior to start with. I remember reading somewhere that their ammo is used to build and test these rifles. I'll most likely load either the Barnes or Woodleighs for it.

I'm using RCBS dies, I have a Lee Classic Press and I also ordered a Lee Factory Crimp Die (which is kind of essential). I found my rounds in the magazine were getting shorter from the recoil before I started using the Lee Crimp Die. Don't start too low powder wise with your reloads. Hang fires can occur. I use Jamison brass, Federal 215 primers and 103g H4895 pushing a 570g TSX to 2300 fps. In my rife 101g H4895 generates around 2180 fps which is a nice 500 NE type load.

Good luck, it's a great caliber,

Chuck

Thanks for the info. I was trying to figure out which press the RCBS 1" dies would fit.
