Load for Eland in June 2014?
      #246981 - 05/05/14 08:35 AM

I'm off in three weeks to RSA in Natal with Crusader Safari. I'm bringing my Scoped SxS in 9.3x74r with 286gr Norma Orynx loads. I'm planning on using this for everything but ...

I'm also bringing a 338-06 Weatherby Ultralight for my father. I'm probably going to end up using this for eland. I have not taken one yet and it's about the only thing on my wish list that I think might need a little more range. The load I worked up for my father is a max charge of RL15 and Barnes 160gr Triple Shock X Tipped at 2950fps. He's planning to hunt Nyala, Bushbuck, Impala, Warthog and Reedbuck so I think it's fine for him and he really likes light and fast.

For Eland should I go up to the 210gr Barnes TSXT or even the 225gr?

I have used the 210 grain Nosler Partitian exclusively and it has always performed well. I would go with it or the 210 Barnes. I have always been of the Elmer Keith school where heavy bullets are a plus. I would also be concerned if you "max loads" were developed in cooler temps than you will experience in Africa.

Just my thinking.

Agree with the above---with eland I tend to go on the heavier bullet side..as to range--might be a bit futher but I have shot 3 and all under 75 yards...1 at above 30...calibers used were .416Rem. shooting 400 gr A-Frames and 300 Ultra mag with 200 gr A-Frames.

I wonder are 210 gr bullets "light for calibre" for eland? Maybe 225 to 250 gr projectiles?

The famous and effective .318 WR (.330) used 250 gr projectiles and is effectively the same as a newer .338/06.

I would not use 160 gr bullets for eland, so definitely go up in weight.

I was thinking the same thing, 160gr are to light in 338, but in a moment of weakness I was tempted. The rifle is a Weatherby ultra-light and does not shoot anything over 210gr even remotely well. I was hoping it would shoot the 225gr Nosler or Barnes but no luck, 2.5 inch groups. It puts the 160gr Barnes TTSX into one ragged hole. The 210gr are more like a 1.25 inch group but that's fine.

Thanks for talking me out of the 160gr load folks.

Your scoped 9.3 would be about ideal for Eland if hunting the usual bush-veldt.

Probably has a different barrel twist designed for using the lighter projectiles.

I thought shots at Eland tended to be longer then most.

If I can use the 9.3x74r I will.

Loaded up 60 210gr Barnes TTSX in new brass, ready to go. Hopefully only as back up.

Thanks for the advise folks.
