Just ordered AHR 300 Weatherby, details?
      #246687 - 30/04/14 01:28 AM

I've been dancing around with a 300 Weatherby for a couple of years now, I had one when I was a teenager and sold it many moons ago, pretty sure the reason was a girl.

Yesterday I ordered a 300 Weatherby from AHR on a standard CZ action, apperantly you don't need the magnum action for this caliber. The gun is intended to be my moose, sable, eland and roan rifle. Maybe brown bear, I have a trip booked with Phil for 2017. A Canadian moose trip in 2016. And a 2015 With Zambezi Delta Safari for Eland and Sable (also buff).

The details so far are;
25 inch stainless match barrel
AHR new synthetic express stock
Barrel band sling swivel
Barrel band front sight, flip up moon sight and folding hood
Quarter rib, with 1 folding leaf, sighted at 100y with the moon sight
Brono style pop up peep sight, sighted at 200y with the regular bead
LOP 14.75 inches
Talley QR rings
2-12x42 Leupold VX6 illuminated
Inletted 2 screw real sling swivel
Cerecoated

Anything else I should consider or add to the invoice? Maybe just a cool touch or two. I don't think I need a steel grip cap, never seen one on a synthetic stock but maybe a spot to store a spare front sight?

I think that is going to be an awesome rifle..

While I feel the scope matches the caliber, it may be a bit overkill for the game you are hunting per your post..but will certainly work..have a very good friend who has that exact same scope on his Kimber Caprivi in .375H&H...really likes it and used it to take a lion last year...its a very bright scope..

I think your setup is good to go. I've had AHR build me a few rifles over the years. No doubt in my mind you'll be pleased with the new rifle! Look forward to seeing some pictures once completed.

Rell,
AHR have a QD mount for a red dot sight (C-more & Leupold) got it as a back up / different competition loads for my .404Jeffery.
I used the C-more one because you don't need to remove the whole sight to change the battery
I have my loads worked out now so will dial it in next time at the range.
Nice rig
Cheers

Red dot sight. Not a bad idea.

I think that would make 4 independent sighting solutions for one rifle.
1. Scope
2. Peep and fixed bead
3. Folding leaf on the quarter and the flip up moon bead
4. Red dot

Probably overkill but possibly a record.

I added it to the invoice.

Rell:
AHR does outstanding work (as I know), but I would re-think your choice of scope.
On my 300 H&H, I'm switching to a 30mm Leupy 2-7x w/ illuminated reticle.

Anything beyond a 2-7x for a 300 magnum rifle dedicated to big game is just going to create more length, weight & eye-relief issues, or give way more magnification, than you're going to need inside 500yds - the so-called "Rifleman's Quarter Mile" (in America anyway.)

From my own hunting experience, I'd anticipate shots on game, realistically, to be inside 300yds for sure, and more likely inside 200yds.
The 7x max (with illumination) will give plenty of magnification, and max-ing out to 12x would only make the shot harder, not easier.

I'm sure others will differ on scope choice, so for what it's worth this is my opinion.

Otherwise, it sounds like you're getting another great AHR rifle.

The scope is partially determined by the fact I need a 14.75 LOP and I need a scope with a long tube so that I can get it far enough back for eye relief.

If the 2-12 does not work it will end up being a straight tube 1-6 or maybe that new straight tube Bender 1-8.

Rell: I understand the LOP issue, but your choice of top-end magnification for this type of rifle shouldn't be related to the size of the tube or dictated by the rifle's LOP. That's a different issue, and partly a mounting issue, depending on what mount & ring options are available for your rifle's receiver.

You mentioned the Bender 1-8x.
Beside the 2-7x, I also looked at some of the 2.5-8xs, as they were highly recommended by hunters who take shots over 200yds, but for my anticipated hunting (mine's a 300 H&H for use on African Plains game), the top-end of 7x should suffice for shots out to 300-350yds.
Most shots will be closer, I'm guessing, as PHs want to get the client as close as possible w/o spooking the game.

Whichever scope you ultimately settle on, the AHR rifle will be a great treasure in your collection!

Good hunting ...

http://www.schmidtundbender.de/en/products/hunting/1-8x24-exos.html

Found the scope for this rig, the Schmidt & Bender 1-8x24 Exos. I can't find one actually for sale yet, I'm assuming they're affordable. Maybe get two so that I have an extra already sighted in, in spare QR mounts. Oh to have champagne tastes on a beer budget.

I sometimes wish I could walk in to Walmart, buy a Rem model 700 in 30-06, mount a Tasco 3-9 on it and be happy.

Oh well it was time to clean out the gun safe anyways.

I like iron sights on rifles myself but do you really want them on a .300 Wby Mag rifle? I understand the looks thing and your setup will be killer!

I really like that choice for a scope. All the range you need and it's fairly compact. Nice!
