I like this forum. I'll never own a fine double or large bore Mauser, but I enjoy being here and participating in the discussions. More often than not I spend most of my time just looking over the different posts and photos. I like that this forum is free of all the nasty little people that seem to dominate on other forums.

I never thought that i would either, and i guess in a way i still don't! However! Here we are, 3 years later and lo and behold! A Nitro Express rifle (.450 3 1/4")! If i can, you can, good sir! Mind you, this is neither a fine double nor a large bore Mauser. Would never have had "the interest" if it weren't for this site.

I think one of the things I like best about this forum is when a member takes an old military rifle ;in most cases in poor condition and or missing parts ,and with skill and love turns it into a superb sporting rifle as did Rigby, Jeffery and Holland & Holland he is not vilified and verbally crucified by the membership. Some of our best threads are indeed other members helping and supplying information for the project. To me many of these " collectors" look past the true worth of a rifle which is what it was designed for ;to USE ! and not as an object of monetary value. It is most common for members of this forum to show pictures of themselves hunting in tough bush conditions with very expensive double rifles and bolt repeaters. I have seen on other forums downright nastiness to a member who tried to post pictures of a project .Its ok to have an opinion up until you start to insult and attack a person for it . None of that on NitroExpress and thank the gods for it!

When the NitroExpress.com site was started I did not own a single double rifle, but did have my M98 .375 and some other rifles, maybe my M-H .577/450. Now I have a few and more to come.

They don't have to be double rifles, they don't have to be big bores, or fancy vintage bolt actions. It is the participation that counts and also getting out there and using them.

What is your .450 that you are talking about?

If anyone knows of any in any caliber, shoot me a PM! Anyways..Heres a pic, then lets get back on track guys!

Sorry for crummy phone photo. (Anyone know where i can get a relatively nice but not mega expensive sling for it, PM me!)

Ash I found the uTube vids of you and Schnieder shooting the Certus.
How is it for extraction and ejection?
Can you run it relatively quickly?

G'day Tinker,

It can be worked surprisingly quickly. Just not off the shoulder, as the long bolt will take an eye out.

This is footage of my first shots with it. I was very apprehensive for the first two shots. The recoil pushed me around a bit more than usual as I let myself go limp when firing old guns for the first time.
The second round at about 0:50 are my third and forth shots. As you can see, the bolt does work quite quickly. And the old girl shoots quite well.

No ejector to speak of. Case is knocked loose at the back of the stroke.
Extraction issue was due to shell holder damaging the brass around the base, well, at least that's what I'm quite sure it is, as new cases have had no issue. I've worked out the flinch issue

Taking it out this weekend (weather allowing) to try and bag something. Fingers crossed!

Couple pics.
One (with the glare of the sun) was trying to get a pic from how it appears when looking down the sites.

Bass Pro in Denver has a 450 and martiniandhagngunmakers.com has a 450/400
Neither in Australia so would have to be imported of course.

The one in Denver I've drooled over for awhile now.. It's the one that got me interested in them.

Here it is, the 1/4 rib looks good, and the stock has alot more drop than mine. Wonder if the engraving is original.
Also the safety is different to the rest I've seen.

Here it is:

As for the Martini and Hagn rifle, pretty sure it's a restocked one? Still looks alright. I'm on the trail of a .450/400 at the moment

I'll fix up the images in the morning, it's 1:24am..

Saw the BP Certus last weekend at the Colo Collectors show- It can be had for $3k US, BUT it is actually 500/450 Nitro IIRC, according to Bart, the guy at BP in Denver. Refinished, though well done. Tempting! And different! Who thought up that screen door latch safety? Bart thought it could have been so you could tie a lanyard to your neck, and on presenting the rifle it would come off safe??
Cheers! Doug

I wouldn't worry about a bore that is a little rough as much as I would be concerned with what look like cracks in the wood on the top of the grip. A rough bore won't keep you from shooting but a cracked stock sure will!
Did you get a full condition report on this gun?

Bore condition opinions can be very subjective. What may be an expected condition to some may not be for others and the British trade sees a LOT of rough guns.

Didnt win it, i only went up to 450 (really meant to be saving..). Originally wrote 520 but crossed that out and put 450, it sold for 480. Ah well, probably would have still lost
