Any thoughts on this Baikal?
      #246637 - 29/04/14 07:31 AM

Not my gun. A friend was interested in any info regarding the story behind it. I haven't seen any of the more modern ones that have a similar action.

Thanks

Tom

Not a great gun but still curious about this one.

Try this forum - http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewforum.php?f=83&sid=d3d6904d897a6929d80c6c5a0cd101ce

This is a Baikal sub-section in a shotgun forum and there are some experts there.

I personally love Baikal shotguns they have always proven to be reliable and shoot well regardless of price.

Baikal / Toz made a lot of high grade guns many of which did not make it to export but are good enough to be compared with high grade guns elsewhere.

Maybe not Purdeys, but they have made trap guns used successfully by their Olympic teams and guns for dignitaries around the world.

Those kind of mid quality TOZ shotguns you could occasionally see for sale in Scandinavia and Germany. IMO this one has pressed engravings and itīs not same quality gun as in TULA made MC -ones. This small lever in sidepanel is new to me, havenīt seen such in TOZ ever before.

This gun is a TOZ-34 probably souvenir grade - http://www.tulatoz.ru/en/production/detail.php?ID=99&SECTION_ID=7

Again to reiterate the quality that has come from Russia over the years with Baikal / TOZ / TSKIB SOO check out this page(s) - http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=83&t=124415

(Warning) This is picture heavy so may take a few moments to load.

Plenty on the net regarding the TOZ-34 including youtube clips if you are so inclined, that said this example is a very facy grade. I have no idea as to value.

Thank you for the replies. I knew someone would be able to answer some questions.
The lever is the takedown. If you look at the foreend, the wood is relieved so that it clears the reciever without taking off the forearm.
The checkering is interesting

and there is a moose carved into the stock. Carving wood is easy compared to engraving. I agree with the impressed reciever work.

Thanks again.

Those ones which I have handled do not have any specified take down -lever but turning the toplever 90 degree right makes same work.

Here are some shots of action after the ultrasonic.

It has cut engraving that wasn't evident in the last pix. Love that flying turnip on the right panel.

Interesting gun. The various Russian plants made all sorts of upgraded guns. Sadly, very few of the higher end stuff ever came here, and with the new sanctions after the Ukrainian crisis, we are unlikely to get anything anymore, I guess. That said, my friend Djamel Talha in France has been looking at Russian guns seriously of late, and he introduced me to the head of the custom shop at Izhevsk recently. I'll send both gentlemen a link to this thread, and let's see what they have to say.

Thank you for sharing these pictures, and good hunting!
