Commercial Mauser AFRICAN TYPE 10,75x68 with great history
      #242276 - 12/02/14 11:12 PM

Original Commercial Mauser an " African Type" in the cal. 10,75x68.
it still remain in the untached conditon as built in 1936.
its a double square bridge without thumbhole
barrel length 68cm, barrel inside brigth and perfect.

history:

this fine gun was purchased by the Zoo of the city Leipzig, formerly
eastern part of germany. as you can see there also existed some original
letters. one of them - an orignal document dated 1945 - coming from
general TRUFANOW, at that time the head of the russian occupying forces,
granting the permission to own firearms in the russian occupied territory,
for socalled "dangerprevention" in the zoo.
in the application of the zoo, leipzg, in the letter to oberst schleff,
of the military government this mauser was listed under nr.1:
"elefantrifle for shooting very big animals like elefant" (translation)
mauser rifle kal. 10,75x68 Mauserwerke A.G. Oberndorf nr. 116580

this rifle i bought in 2010 directly from the zoo, leipzig as they decided
to have more simple rifles for "danger prevention" and therefor they bought
insteaed Blaser R93 rifles professional.

this rifle i was able to sell within 48 hours. it went overseas in a very
fine commercial mauser collection. it finally found a home which this fine rifle
really deserved!!

did the zoological garden had ammo for this rifle when you bought it?

I am looking for a 10 rounds box 10,75x68 made by Povazske Strojarne, Headstamp PS.

Note the no centered name on the left wall. A rare and wondeful example.

It looks extraordinary because there is no thumbcut and text is same place as usual.

Igorrock

Most solid left walls DO have the lettering centred, ie in the middle of the wall.

Occasionally we see one like this where it is not, probably due to habit of marking it left due to the cutout, which in this case is course is not there.

Thus, it is an interesting variation, but generally accepted as '' not intended", and therefore it is NOTt in the same place as is " usual", at least not for a solid wall.

I hope this helps.

Best

I just looked Jon Speedīs Mauser book and he writes that you could find both alternatives. But in my eyes it seems that especially magnum actions with solid wall use to have centered text.

Norbert,

thanks for showing this!
What a find, an extraordinary rifle!

Did you ask about the other rifles on that 1945 list?

The "Tschin" will be a "Tesching" or rimfire rifle.
But what was the "middle rifle for shooting mid-size animals such as lion",
made by Simson with 6 mm caliber?

I am thinking the same.
My 10.75 DSB has the lettering to the left as does another in 9.3 of a friend.
My guess is that the stamping was done with the action in a jig and since these are the same size as the thumbcut actions, that is where the stamp went.

I know of one intermediate length with the lettering centred .

Lester Womack considered that it was the "later build" solid walls that had the center lettering as opposed to specific action lengths.

I am curious: Is the 68mm barrel length measured from the breach or from the front of the action ring? I suspect the actual full barrel length, including the barrel tenon to be 70mm.
