First Double for me!! FAIR Safari
      #243871 - 16/03/14 05:59 AM

Hi guys, I've lurked here for a while, not really posted much.....but anyway, just did the "deed' and bought my first double.
It's a FAIR Safari in 9.3x74r. I've handled a few double and decided that I didn't want the heavy traditional calibers, as this is more for fun and hunting here in NA. I certainly got the light weight I wanted with this one, only 6lbs!! on my cheap scale. The test target says it was regulated using 16.5 bullets, so thats 255grs. The first loads I'm going to try will be 250gr Accubonds over IMR 4064. Anyway, here's a few pics, any info about learning to reload for a double most appreciated!!

Thepitchedlink, you are tougher than me, I would want to use a shoulder pad on a 9.3x74 that weighed 6lbs !! But if it doesn´t bother you, good stuff ! best

Well, got out for some fun. Here's the first results. Load 1 is 53gr of IMR 4064, going up to Load5 at 57gr, one shot each barrel...I think I pulled R5...anyway, kinda 2 groups there. I figure that's not bad for first time, shooting off my knee in the rain. It was about 50-60 yards....all 10 of those shots would equal a dead moose...even a deer. The 57gr load was moving at 2425 fps, so close to the factory loads that the test target says was used for regulation. My biggest issue was the way the stock wacked my cheek during recoil...might just take some getting use too....or it doesn't fit right. The LOP is 14.5 ", it feels good, but maybe I'll try a 1/2 spacer and see how that feels..sure was fun

I have a Merkel in 500NE and a friend has the identical model in 9.3x74 - they both wacked my cheek when the LH barrel was fired, and both trigger guards whacked my middle finger when the RH barrel (front trigger) was fired. I haven't really consciously tried to avoid this and both "symptoms" have disappeared ie the issue will go away for you too I reckon.

Great cartridge too BTW. (I need one of these too I think.)

pitchedlink - PM me if close to PG. I've got some 9.3 250gr. Barnes Old style spitzers. They might be quite wonderful from your rifle & worth a test.
I've a batch loaded for testing in my 9.3x62 - was waiting for warmer weather for testing - and it's here.

pitchedlink,

Congratulations on the new acquisition. I hope you enjoy the new adventure. I am curious,
is that the DR that was on display at Chilliwack?

Odd that they would have regulated 9.3x74R with 16.5 grams (255 grain) bullets, when the standard common wight for this caliber in Europe is 286 grains and always has been.

I found that interesting as well, DRJack - I'd be inclined to get some Norma Alaskan RN's and Hornady 286SP's for testing - maybe some 285gr. Privi's from tradeexcanada.

I've got lots of 286's...will try some.....I don't know why they used 255's either....I'm guessing b/c the gun is so light?
I put 1lb of lead shot in the butt tonight, but it makes her a little butt heavy....I'll try it and see....I think "fullhouse" 286's will rattle my teeth a bit

The results will be interesting. If I might make a suggestion, though.

When I sorting out loads in my Muzzle Loading DR, I found shooting both barrels onto a single target made for a difficult time in actually 'seeing' what I was accomplishing with load changes.

I then resorted, from a suggestion here on Nitroexpress, to fire multiple shots from each barrel onto that barrel's own target. After firing 3 to 5 shots of a single load from each barrel onto a separate target, then transposing those shots onto a white sheet of paper, red dot for right (starboard) barrel, blue dot for left (port) showed MUCH more easily how each barrel was actually shooting, relative to an aiming point, rather than looking at ragged holes with labeling on a multicoloured ie: black/white/ or red/white background.

I'd set up both targets side by side, then shoot the left barrel at the left target, and right barrel at the right target, 3 to 5 shots from each barrel, one load - for group as well as group placing.

Then, I'd place each target over a single white sheet of paper, marking the aiming point with a black dot or circle, then red right or blue dot for the that colour's barrel.

That system worked VERY well for me.

After finding a load that gave the regulation I wanted, I then shot both barrels with that load onto a single target.

Shooting multiple loads onto a single target with both barrels, I find rather confusing for my old muddled brain.
