BTW, all the prewar "Original Wilhelm Brenneke, Leipzig" bolt action rifles were in fact made for Brenneke by E.Schmidt & Habermann, Suhl. If you have a close look you will always find the small trademark Esha stamp on these "Brenneke" rifles. Most often it is under the barrel, sometimes even hidden below the magazine floorplate opening lever.
The Brenneke rifles even retain the Schmidt & Habermann serial numbers, often found on the rear sight base. Here is again the rear sight and serial number of the full-stocked "Brenneke" rifle shown above:

And here is the one on my Schmidt & Habermann M21 in 6.5x54 K Mauser:

As Schmidt & Habermann numbered all their guns in one consecutive series, regardless of type and model, both rifles are datable to 1922-3.

Quote:

I will never understand what caused German gun makers to alter bolt handles in this hideous way, when they had a perfectly good example of what a flat bolt handle should look like in the Mannlicher Schoenauer and the Mauser Type M.

What xausa said (sort of...)

Regarding the "butter-knife" bolt-handle, it is my belief that they are inappropriate when the bolt-handle is attached behind the rear bridge, as on the Mausers pictured.

Having owned and hunted with MS rifles for several decades, frequently reloading at the shoulder in the thick of things, I have come to understand that the flat Mannlicher-style bolt-handle works by placing the thumb on the top of the "root" and lifting with the fingers. This is a piece of cake (and very fast!) if the handle is forward of a split-bridge, but not ergonomic at all if the rear mount-base, bolt-shroud flange, and cocking-piece safety are all conspiring to get in the way.

And don't get me started on the swept-back butter-knife bolt-handle demanded by the American market in the 1950s: utterly defeats the purpose, and of course, ultimately caused the demise of this marvelous genre of classic hunting rifles.

Just my humble opinion BTW, worth precisely what you paid for it.
Happy to consider thoughts and experiences from Mauser Type M users...?

As for the ugly(?) panel-beaten example discussed above, not my cup of tea at all I'm afraid.

How does this technique work with a scope mounted?

Rear mount on a Mannlicher, split-bridge Mauser or Commission rifle is usually a side-mount on left side. Doesn't get in the way on those I've fired belonging to friends, although my own examples are open-sighted.
The thumb doesn't want to stay on the bolt-handle 'root' once the bolt is lifted BTW.

Here is a proper Type B Mauser built in 1924 complete with original factory scope and a working scope. A great bargain at it's current bid price.

Europe and the UK seems like the place to be if you want to buy these types of rifles.

I have not seen any on Ozzie used guns. Or am I looking in the wrong place?

Some of the euro prices look reasonable. Hate to see what they would go for here.

Albert

an interesting O.Geyger/Berlin(strong Suhl smell) mauser in 8x57IS by FeineJagdwaffen Nobert Wenniger
what can I say he had allways the best
http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=4848186

thats again an evidense it was not the damned war which led into the devolution of the real and only good taste
a simple and nice 8x57IS probably build by an 98K action in 1957
http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=4844933
a model "Waidmannsfreund" made in Kreiensen make my think on the old firm Burgsmüller.
http://www.burgsmueller.de/en/About-us__3/ they dont make guns anymore
I would not wonder when "Waidmannsfreund" was an old, maybe pre WW 1, Burgsmüller trademark.

the 1957 proofed 8x57 JS sporter has the double set trigger mechanism installed into a military 98k first version WW2 stamped triggger guard (2nd version had no locking screw slot), not the thing you would normally expect on any one-off made rifle !

and that part appears to be mismatched to the serial of the rifle ?

A Rigby Mauser in .275 Rigby aka 7x57 rifle offered for sale on egun: http://www.egunner.de/market/item.php?id=4599625
According to the seller bought in the early 1990s from Rigby, then still London, Paul Roberts era. Receiver ring inscribed : Sighted for Rigby's spezial High Velocity 275 bore cartridge pointed bullet 140 gns . Mounted with a 1960s Hensold/Zeiss West 4x32 Diasta D scope on a German EAW side mount.
Apparently heavily reworked, refinished and recheckered. The bolt handle at least is a replacement IMHO, as it has a round military knob, not the teardrop shape of the advertized "last before WW1" time. The cocking piece is also a replacement, as it is the short military type. asking price: Euro 4400.-, about $ 5940.-
