HERMANN GORING’S DOUBLE SQUARE BRIDGE MAGNUM MAUSER
      #243174 - 01/03/14 12:02 PM

Whilst the provenance may not be for everyone, this is truely a unique and one off example of argueably the finest sporting rifles ever made.

Dunno why this didn't get any responses..But wow..agree on the "this is truely a unique and one off example of argueably the finest sporting rifles ever made." part!

***I'll edit this post and add the pics in tommorow***

*HERMANN GORING’S DOUBLE SQUARE BRIDGE MAGNUM MAUSER SPORTING RIFLE WITH SCOPE.
SN 7076. Cal. 9.3 x 73 mm. (.366 Bore diameter. .540 Case rim diameter. Essentially .404 Jeffery necked down to 9.3, similar to 9.5 x 73 Miller – Greiss magnum.) The history of this fine rifle can be traced back directly to Hermann Goring’s vacation house near the Berghof near Berchtesgaden, where it was liberated by Lt. Col. Richard A. King, and subsequently acquired by Lester Womack, and pictured in his book, THE COMMERCIAL MAUSER ’98 SPORTING RIFLE; and later in Jon Speed’s MAUSER ORIGINAL OBERNDORF SPORTING RIFLES. It has 28-1/2″ tapered round bbl engraved (Ludwig) “Schiwy – BERLIN” on top. Bbl is mounted with island bases for front scope claw base, single standing rear sight, and front ramp for silver bead. A sling loop is soldered to bottom of bbl. Rare commercial Mauser, magnum length, solid sidewall, double square action, with anti wobble projection at rear, is marked with SN and eagle “N” proof on left side of receiver ring, and with “MAUSER – WERKE A. G. OBERNDORF a/N” on sidewall. A claw base has been fitted to the cut down square bridge. Bolt with classic pear-shaped knob, is stamped with SN on bolt root, and “N”. Bolt shroud has been fitted with Buhler low scope safety. Drop box bottom metal has hinged floorplate retained by release button in trigger guard bow, and has been fitted with double triggers. Trigger guard and floorplate have triangles of nicely cut, shaded, scrolled acanthus above and below central relief engraving of Hermann Goring’s personal crest, a shield around raised mailed fist holding aloft a ring. This shield is surmounted by a knight’s helm, which is further surmounted by another winged mailed fist with ring. Action also features a Greener type side safety. Nicely marbled European walnut horn capped pistol grip stock with borderless point pattern checkering at grip, and no checkering on forend, has inlet ebony triangle behind receiver tang, and square dark walnut block inlet where bolt handle turns down. Stock is fitted with leather faced Silver pad, and spring-loaded, pop-up, shadow line cheekpiece to allow for scope use, having release button and guide spur hole in ovate engraved escutcheon behind grip. There are also two very interesting fold-out spikes mounted in stock under front scope base which can be hooked into a handy tree or fencepost to steady rifle. Sling loop on toe line, matching that on bbl, are fitted with brown leather green rubber backed carrying sling. Carl Zeiss Zielsechs scope with duplex three post reticle with central dot is mounted in soldered on claw rings. Drop at heel: approx 2-3/4″. Drop at comb: approx 1-3/4″. Weight without scope: 9 lbs. 8 oz. LOP: 14-1/4″. PROVENANCE: Cowan’s auction listing with more complete history. CONDITION: Excellent. Bbl and action retain approx 90% orig blue, silvering from normal wear on high points. Stock retains most of its orig oil finish with a number of light marks and scrapes. Bore is excellent, bright, shiny, with sharp rifling throughout. Action is smooth. Scope retains 85 – 90% of its blue, optics clear. Sling is fine. 4-51042 MGM259 (20,000-30,000) – Lot 332

This same rifle has been described in Jon Speed`s first Mauser book page 268. There rifles caliber is 9,3x70 which is the way I always have read it.

No, those are so-called "Kaiserhaken", pointed hooks that may be folded out from the foreened. The Points may be stuck into a handy tree to steady the rifle when shooting at game.

Must say i think those hooks are a neat idea. Whether they work very well or not is a different matter.

I can tell you, they work wonderfully!
My uncle had a rifle very similar to this one with an adjustable cheek/comb and hooks. These were shaped more like ice hooks but still recessed neatly into the forend.
My impression is that they were for use in forests of big trees and when anchored against the side of a tree is very stable and allows almost complete concealment of the hunter. They both popped out on each side - then you folded the side you didn't want out back in to the catch. I guess you could simply hold the one you didn't want in while you released the other. Being a kid I didn't think about that at the time and of course in a real hunting situation you would do it very quietly anyway.

ah, originally invented for Wilhelm II, like the "Kaisergriff", for shooting with one hand?

Quite unnecessary, I think, if you got 2 good arms and have mastered the technique of shooting "stehend angestrichen", standing and using a vertical post for support.
Now I've learnt to never rest the forend directly against a hard support, always have your hand between forend and the post.
When using these hooks I'd be concerned about a change in point of impact.

http://www.germanhuntingguns.com/docs/Se...%20Journa42.pdf

Quote:

"It is known that Kaiser Wilhelm was a good shot and successful hunter, but he needed all the help he could get from the gun makers. Many of the Kaiser’s guns with horn trigger guards have a hook like you see on this gun.
Other guns have a steel hook that can be folded out of the forearm as the one shown below. It is called Anstreichhaken or also Kaiserhaken in Germany, and is used for steadying the gun by hooking it to a tree or post. The hook can be installed on both sides of the forearm, was available to gun makers by companies that produced small gun components, and its use was not limited to hunters that had a physical problem. A flat spring holds it securely in the folded-out or -in position. Other guns have a Kaisergriff, a very short pistol grip that sticks out further on the bottom than normal grips.
A third and more complicated shooting aid made for the Kaiser is a gun without triggers, but with push buttons on top of the grip for firing the gun."

Ash,

Thanks for posting the photos. I will move them to the NE server just in case they disappear one day. I tried to get them myself but for some reason it wouldn't work this time.

You mentioned a lack of responses earlier. Old Hermann's rifles are auctioned every now and again, the same ones or perhaps different ones, I forget. Some people get upset from time to time on some forums, but in the end they are just firearms once owned by an infamous person. He was the "hunt-master" of Germany during the NAZI period and during WW1 a fighter ace of the skies. Maybe one of our German friends on NE could give the correct title?

Many of Europe's "infamous" were also hunters and no doubt have firearms once owned by them floating around somewhere, eg the Eastern European Communist dictators.

Some interesting posts since your earlier post too.

I hadn't either before this. Must say - I think they'd look rather snazzy on a 9.3xAnything. Can't find a single thing I don't like about this rifle.

Oops sorry I somehow missed the two posts above! Perhaps I had the thread open from before they were posted and returned to it without refreshing and so did not see the later posts?

Infamous is absolut understated!
He has been something MORE...one of the most rotten but highly intelligent (IQ 138) characters of that era.

Horrible, mad, dependent on morphine and ...is it fascinating(?), no I don't think, but something similar.

Citation (google translator):

"Naturally, the common people do not want war [...] But in the end it is the leaders of a country that determine the policy and it is always easy to bring the people to join in, whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship to be a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. [...] it's very simple. it takes nothing to do but to tell the people, they are being attacked, and accuse the pacifists for lack of patriotism and to assert that they were bringing the country in danger. This method works in any country. " Books.google interview with Gustave Gilbert in the prison cell, April 18, 1946, Nuremberg Diary S.270 -

"If even one enemy plane flies over our Reich, I want hot Meier!"

Soon he was called Meier...
or 'Lametta (tinsel) Heini' or 'gold pheasant'.

Hermann Goering won the Blue Max = Order Pour Le Merite as a first lieutenant in WW1. As a flying ace he claimed 22 victories from 1915 - 1918.

Yes it is, but it was an attempt to placate the usual persons that can not see a rifle owned by an historical character, without having to rave about the evils of the person.

Everything is fine, NitroX.
That was just a note from Germany, a part of Germany with Carinhall and some more "places and people" in the neighborhood.
