Mannlicher Schoenauer 1908
      #242552 - 17/02/14 01:12 PM

Hello, I am new to Nitro Express forum. I have a Mannlicher-Schoenauer 1908 of unknown caliber. My grandfather left this rifle to me. From what I can find this rifle should be 8x56ms but it is stamped 8,7 57 on one side and 7m on the other. It also has two bullet weights 18gr on the left by the 8,7 57 and several inches towards the rear of the action 12.7gr. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. I am taking it to my gunsmith for a chamber cast this week but would like to understand the marks on the rifle.
Thank You

Hello and Welcome

If you can put up some pics, that would be a good start.

Best

While waiting for photos, from your description the rifle was apparently converted, rebored and reproofed, pre-1940 in Germany to 9x57. 12.7 gramm was the bullet weight of the original 8x56 M-S chambering. 8.7mm is the bore/land diameter (not groove or bullet!) as determined by the proofhouse by slipping cylindrical plug gages into the barrel. 57 mm is the case length. 18 gramm was the heaviest bullet weight of the 9x57 cartridge. Austrian proofhouses did not stamp such information. There should be also crown/B, crown/N, crown/G and crown/R proofmarks on or under the barrel.

I have planned to do so, waiting on my gunsmith to get the materials he told me he has had only one other person ask for a chamber cast since he has been in business and didn't have what was needed in stock.

where might I find ammo for this rifle if it is a 9x57? I have seen 9x57 mauser but somehow I don't believe it will be that easy.

Try Wolfgang Romey in Germany.

I notice they have 9x57 and 9x57R. What is the difference and how do you determine which your rifle is compatible with? Thanks to you both each website had some in stock.

9x57 is rimless, usually for bolt actions. This is the one usable in your M-Sch action.
9x57R is RIMMED for break-open and other single shot actions, will not fit your rifle.
