single shot rifle action - Fraser vs Farquharson
      #241270 - 27/01/14 08:40 AM

I noticed there are a lot of single shot rifle enthusiasts here on this forum.
For me the single shot has a lot of appeal, it represents the "stalking rifle" concept - simple, reliable and accurate. Beside the single shot break-down rifles I tend to like more and more the aesthetics of Farquharson action and Fraser.
I would like to know your opinion on what is in reality more practical - the Fraser‘s sidelever falling block action or Farquharson's falling block underlever design...

Thank you for your inputs.

I prefer Henry's 1871 patent and Westley Richards of 1897.

For looks - Alexander Henry Hammer

for ease of operation - Field's Patent

for practicability - probably the George Gibbs

Only my opinion

Having owned Alex Henry falling blocks, Farquharsons, Fraser and 1902 Webley I think the Fraser was by far the smoothest falling block I ever used. Smooth as butter and gold plated inside! For some reason I like the 1902 Webley .450 Nitro that I now own. Looks massively strong.

I think it depends on what chambering you are choosing.
The Frasers are very nice, very smooth but the underlevers such as the Farqs, Westley 1897 and 1902 Webleys give the shooter that extra ooomph for case extraction. Not such a big deal today as it was in the old days when they were new.
As far as aesthetics, I think they are all beautiful in different ways, even the big '02 Webley.
Remember, there are many variations and sizes of the Gibbs Farq, a couple differing sizes of trade Farq and three for the '02 Webley so the rifle can be tailored to the cartridge and purpose.

Huvious, I understand you do prefer the hefty Farqs underlever for big bores in the case of DG hunting, don’t you?

Well, the only Dangerous Game hunting I have done is in my imagination!
But, yes, I do really like the big falling blocks for the big bores. In fact, I have a 450NE being built on a big Farquharson and a 500NE being done on a big Webley '02 action. Can't wait!

There is just something right about a classic Farquharson big bore.

CZ,
I think your idea of the single shot falling block rifle fits in nicely with, what I consider to be the best made, and best looking falling block rifles, that is, those made by George Gibbs. The ones I have seen by him were very nicely presented, and in "stalking" calibers, as opposed to heavy knock down calibers, the G,Gibbs rifles were of course made by Gibbs, whereas a lot of the trade Farquharsons were Foreign made in the white, and finished in Britain by the outworkers for retailers like W,J,Jeffery, the standard of work on these trade rifles was quite a lot lower that the G,Gibbs made offerings, even some of the Webley "made" rifles have been quoted as being of Foreign origin, and there was a huge court case mounted in the 1800 about this. Westley Richards build their 1895 action in everything from rook rifle to Elephant stopper (I have one in .577 NE)but I think the G,Gibbs Farquharson was by far the best, as is born out by the fact that people actually paid the equivalent price of a basic double for them. Get one, they are very nice!
Chris.

I cannot say that I disagree...

My choice for a stalking rifle. Winchester High Wall in 7X57R. Metal work by the late Harry Creighton, stock by the late Hal Hartley. Niedner steel butt plate and grip cap. Leupold VariX III 1.5-5X in a Buehler mount.

Thanks Huvius.
Great calibers for the North American hunter.
